Powders for the .250 Savage with cast boolits.

I've been using Reloder 7 with 100g (nominal) boolits in my Savage 16 bolt gun and Rem 700's down thru the years. That powder works well with gas checked un powder coated boolits. When I tried powder coating, I did not get good results even though the bullets looked good.
What powders do you use in this cartridge and cast bullets, either powder coated or not?

I have old skool stand bys ....... IMR 4350 has been good to me in everything in the 308 and 30-30 family . H322 has been a pleasant surprise in 6.8 SPCII & 7 RWH (straight neck up from .277 to .284 in the 6.8 SPC) .

With 120s you can probably "just scoop the case full" with H4831 and I 4350 probably isn't far off from getting you good velocity and decent accuracy . Both are too much of a good thing so far in a 257 Roberts and 25-06' .

Same loads with cast 95-100 grain bullets in both 243 Winchester and 250 Savage--12.0 to 14.0 grains of 2400 giving 1450-1750 FPS and stellar accuracy with sized/lubed castings.

My buddy Ed shoots a .250 Savage a lot ( accurately, but in "low node" for just target shooting!)
I can pick his mind if you like

My pet 250 Savage bullet was an NEI #19 IIRC, which resembles a SAECO #301 (RG-4 plagiarism) that got shrunk in the wash. Lymans #257312 and #257420 did almost as well at 50 and 100 yards. Caveat--my rifle was a 1930-made Savage 99 with 1-14" twist.

250 is one of my two favorite cartridges, the 257 Roberts being the other. That said, I've never worked up any cast loads for either. My 99R was made in 1953 and has the 14" twist rate so it may be limited on bullet length. I've got molds for the Lyman 257420gc, a group buy 80 gr gc bullet, and the NOE version of the old Lyman 257283 in a plain based mold. All three have been used over the years in my 115 year old '94 Marlin 25-20. I've got quite a few pounds of the 283 PC'd and sized, maybe it's time to give it a try in the 250 Savage. My Ruger early M77 Tang Safety 250-3000 is out for a new barrel, hopefully it will be home by fall. That one may get the most work with cast in the future.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
I have plenty of 2400, so I 'll give that a try.
Anybody use the Cramer 55A?
I have one, haven't done enough with it to offer and advice. Gorgeous looking bullet and a super quality mould though!

I see you have a Ruger 77 tang safety in .250 Savage. I do as well. Mine has been a safe queen for about 15 years now. Last time it saw light of day was when one of my grandkids shot a white tail with it using the Cramer 55A.
Perhaps I should drag the old queen out and see how she performs in CBA competition?

There's a tang safety Ruger 77 here, but it's a full stock. I wish the barrel was 2" longer, but it is handy and sexy.

Got that M77 Tang safe back from Shaw with a new 250 barrel. Very disappointed so far. Notes show they faced the front receiver ring and the barrel was hitting the left side of the barrel channel, so I opened it up a bit and re-bedded the recoil lug to help center it. So far I've shot 3 jacketed bullets of 2 weights, 3 powders, several seating depths, and used 2 scopes. Best 3 shot group was 1.75", most at 2" or so. I know Shaw isn't Kreiger or Hart, but had seen several posts elsewhere about getting good barrels including a well known gun writer. We'll see what they have to say.
