I found this today on a local sale board, called and it was still available so I took the plunge. It looks almost new has some nice pressed checkering and Realist brand scope mount. Even though the mount is on the side of the action the scope is directly over the bore. My trigger gauge measures 2.75# with the slightest creep. I am anxious to see what it will do BUT I am recovering from surgery and my doctor and my warden says no for about 10 more days. Im not liking this getting old but I like the alternative Even less.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Revelation was Western Auto's store brand Western Auto was HUGE back in the 50's and 60's. I recall buying Moon hub caps there in Havelock NC while in the USMC. Sad they're gone.

Nice rifle!

Are those private label Savage 340's? Yours is in very nice shape. If the warden won't let you shoot just call a buddy and watch him shoot it. Next best thing.

Thanks. I can’t wait to shoot it and start developing loads. I read a couple of threads here on the Savage 340 but still haven’t found the one I really want to read. It contained material about bedding tricks to get better accuracy.

My 340 in 30-30 does good except for the 40 degree or lower cold barrel shot. A very lightly oiled patch in at the muzzle and out the breach cures that. I have a buddy that used to have one in 222 Remington, said it was the most accurate 222 he ever owned and regrets selling it for something prettier. His words. When it comes to guns, pretty is an unintended bonus for me.
I think I have a link to some old 340 series articles and gunsmith advise. I'll look and post if I find them.

Yeah, when I bought my first one that led to a second one and I was searching high and low for as much info as possible when I found the parent page then bookmarked it.

Brother, I have the Savage offset mounting not the B-Square. Before you buy a new scope, measure the distance between the back of front ring and the front of the back ring. The reason is the turret housing on newer scopes exceeds the distance between the rings. I had some old weaver K's that worked, but they are all 50's/60's vintage and are a little cloudy. They still hold zero. I would love to have a brighter scope but it is what it is.

I have a one peice mount I got from Sun Optics, much better mount than the old Weaver side mounts, but doesn't look vintage if that's a concern.
