Ruger Security Six 357

I seem to have found myself in possession of two Ruger Security Six 357s (1974 and 1977 vintage) all the sudden. Older one has been around the block and needs a little TLC but functions fine. Newer one has been shot very little and has the original box/price tag ($159!) and manual. Interesting thing is that the paperwork lists a parts break down and a list of all the parts with prices! A cylinder was $11!

No experience other than a box of ammo thru one. Thoughts? Good/Bad/Ugly? Thanx

Had one, got a GP100 now, the SS is more K frame size comparable to S&W M19 whereas the GP100 is L frame size. Enough size and weight difference to be noticeable. Congrats on having two, for daily carry the SS is hard to beat. Can't imagine anything sensible hurting eithr one. If you ever decide to part ways with eithr or both I bet you won't have any problems selling them.

I owned one. Excellent revolver, in some way preferable (well, almost!) to a Smith K frame. I've shot several and all were accurate as I could hold. In a 38/357 I far prefer them tot he oversize and clunky, IMO, GP100 and certainly more than the Redhawk style. The sole complaint I ever had was "clink" sound of the transfer bar. Other than that they were Ruger best DA revolver IMO.

I bought one once . Gave middle book for a blue gun and got a SS .

It's a 74' also 6" . It's not nearly the shooter that Mom's BlackHawk is , but hers is an old model with maybe 6-7 boxes through it and never "repaired" or upgraded to the T bar . The Sec6 was measurably better after matching the throats up . One fat , one big , 2 just right , and 2 just a little too tight if I remember right it was .359 , .8585 , 2@ .358 , and 2@.357 . I took them out to .3583 and called it close enough for as cast Lee 358-158 RNFP .

Built like a tank to be sure . Nice score on the boxed set .

I love K frames. I believe I have 5 different models of K frames. The Ruger Six is a great revolver. Stronger the the Smith with about the same bulk. I Own a 4" and it has found a permanent home. I Am looking for a second, but no luck so far.

If I had a chance to get one for a decent price I wouldn’t hesitate.
Typical Ruger durability.

Have had a STS 6" since 1976, right after frame change. Bought it as a 2 3/4" , real snappy with Hot Loads. Sent back for 6" bbl. In those days Ruger would send the bbl back to you. Still have it.

Couple years later, wanted a shorty again. So I bought a blue 2 3/4" Speed Six. No Hot Loads, but My Sister "stole" it a year later. Finally got a Service Six STS W / 3" bbl in 1988, last year of Production. Round "butted it. Put Pachmayer's on it. Great Shooting Guns.

Can't began to count How many 1,000's of .357 target loads have gone thru them. A good shooting load of the Lyman # 358429 over 6.0grs of Unique.

And I got the Blue Speed Six back last year when my sister passed. Almost like new.

Thanx guys. LOTS of experience with Rugers, just not specifically with the SS. And agree, it is like a K on steroids (or like the Russians would build a tank! lol!). Intent was to possibly turn them for a small profit (I can't pass by a solid gun at a good price, knowing I will never lose money...), but that may go by the wayside. I LOVE Rugers! And unlike my beautiful Smith K, I will never worry about shoot full house loads in these and hurting them.

358156 posted this ahead of me--K-frame size and L-frame strength. I would have had trouble saying "No" to either or both of them.

Rex, couldn't agree with you more. Have a set of Herrett Shooting Stars on My 6".
My GP100 4" was one of the first guns to go when I started selling off stuff to finance Cowboy Shooting.

It was the first GP100 I'd seen. Had 2 piece grips too. Still have those as I'd sold it with Pachmayrs.

The GP100 is simply too big and heavy for a 357. The SSix is just right and has the extra steel where it's needed the Smith K frames don't while at about the same weight. Ruger got things right with the SSix and the Bearcat. The Bearcat just needs adjustable sights.
