Had a 625 in 5". Great gun, but, but, I admit in a moment of weakness....... Well I will pick one up again at some point when the opportunity and money are in alignment.

Not my first 45 ACP revolver, John. I had a 1980-built S&W Model 25-2 x 6.5". It was dimensionally unsound, and I got tired of the gymnastics required to address its issues. It went down the road during the mid-80s. I didn't have the cast bullet experience then that I have now, and would have had a gunsmith make some mild mods to make the thing behave itself.

An N frame in 45 Colt would always be a fine revolver.
But a 45 Colt in a 5 shot would be a real winner to me. Along the lines of the M69 would be a super hunting revolver.

There is a Model 69 x 4.25" sitting in a local shop like a lost puppy for a couple months. It is a nice idea, but I have balked at buying it. N-frame 44 Magnums are a bronco ride with SAAMI-level loads already, the L-frame version would just be more of the same. A "Skeeter's Load" 44 Special-ish loading or a 45 Colt at black-powder velocities makes a lot more sense to this onlooker.

Aware that keeping your grandsons shooting appetite fed means quantity over bullet weight but the RCBS 45-270-SAA does everything out of an ACP/AR case as it will do out of the older 45 Colt case in a S&W revolver. Looks a little funny though.

A single source, HANDLOADER magazine (issue 306) Febuary-March 2017 page 38. I dont have the whole article titled 45 AUTO RIM + P but do have the load data saved. If you'd like I can photo copy and mail you what I have.

I have had my 5" 625 since 1988 (first year they made them) and it has always been a great shooter. Another ACP/AR gun I really like and shoot a lot for that "classic" feel is my 1955 target. I tend to shoot everything in the 625 but in the 1955 Target I started shooting a NOE copy of an older Lyman SWC design in .45 AR cases. It is a 230 gr. SWC with a GC and I load them a bit stiffer load because it shoots better in the big N frame.

In the pic below my 625 is on top with my 929 and 627 below it. As you can see in the pic I like to shoot my revolvers a lot so they seem to be perpetually grungy.

Here is the 1955 Target with a moon clip of ACP loaded with my home made big mouth 250 gr. JHP's

And lastly is a pic of the NOE SWC bullet I load in .45 AR. On the left is as cast and on the right has been HiTek coated and GC added.

I have several ACP revolvers. The eldest is from 1918 (Model 1917), the newest are from 2007 (Model 22-4). My favorite bullet to use in it comes out of the SAECO 453 mold, a 235 grain full wadcutter. I load it to duplicate hardball and it is accurate and the flat nose hits hard. NOE and others make similar molds. 43218B10-9D3E-4F88-B99F-D164D59385FE.jpeg

None of my ACP revolvers have the full underlug, yet.

Dang Ben, that's some fine shooting there! I struggle to get one-hole groups at 15 yards from bags and a bench.

That IS some right-fine shooting, sir.

I have a relatively-recent Lyman #452423 that has remained unwarmed since I got it in June 2018. I plan to change that as soon as the Summer Blast Furnace (which returned on Monday) burns itself out. The "423" is the Keith bullet meant for 45 ACP revolvers, and its cavity has kind of a squatty aspect to it. So do my #454424 moulds (one each 1-cav and 2-cav), though they scale @ 253 grains dry & unsized. David's RCBS 45-270-SWC photo looks like what a 45 Colt SWC should look like to me. #424 looks abbreviated, for lack of better descriptors.

My friend was with me, he shot the revolver and shot a BETTER group than I did. That always hurts !
