Winelover and Rick, if you are happy with your ophthalmologist, can you PM me the name? We're way overdue for new lenses and frames. I stopped seeing optometrists over 30 years ago.

Went to 'ranch' Friday, 10 B.S. were there and set up the reflector telescope, looking at stars. Asked it they saw the Chinese mars landing -'what?'. Tried cfe pistol vs w231 in 40 in the dark, no moon. As the shooter, didn't notice much difference but others on the side said there was minor diff., so much for flash suppression. Oh, XDm40 full sized with same load. I was surprised no night blindness due to flash, saw the target board from flash of shot. Sat, set up Lucky ground blind, watched the kids chop up a very large deadfall - like 3 hrs work with chain saw and still only 1/4 done. Set up the new whirlybird and missed the first 2 shot, nicked a couple and busted one. Haven't done shotgun in couple years. Kids were set up to shoot shotgun as we left. Got to talking with relative of original owners, he brought out his 38-40 colt new army (peacemaker). We couldn't figure old or 50s version. Serial numbers matched but had some others added from 50s. Not much bluing left on it, had a few loose screws that got tightened and it functioned much better.
edit 38-40, not 32-40. 44wcf necked down to 40 cal. And older GS said he get a new rifle. 270WSM BLR but he didn't bring it, can't find ammo.

Cast another 200-250 SWC for the 44 special.
I am way lower on projectiles than I should be, the winter went to waste when it came to casting.

Lawn, Garden and outside work keeping me very busy...hectic time of year...seems like everything needs to be done at once!
Turned one more bed in the big garden, added compost, organic fertilizer and pulverized lime stone & turned it again. I knew it was going to rain so I quickly set out a few more plants in the new bed, One Scotch Bonnet, one "Defiant" Tomato plant and a somewhat rare Sinahuisa chiles from Maya Ejido Communal farm in the State of Sonora, Mexico ( supposed to be a very flavorful chile with medium to mild heat)
Still have 3 more beds to do the same with in the big garden but today's rain cut my day short. However this week looks very promising with temps reaching the 80's! Now to clean up the growing area in the basement until next season and get it all back for casting and cleaning guns again!

Did a full electrical top-out for the room addition and insulated the ceiling. Full day's work because nothing is ever as simple as it first appears.

That is the truth!

I hate it when my wife says “Can’t we just do xxx” because it is never JUST anything. Always other things that crop up, need changed, fixed, or whatever.

the wife went down shooting with me today.
for some weird reason she actually listened to me and shot a 20 instead of her normal 12.
only taken since 1985 for it to sink in.

come home to the spigot out front making a mess down the outer wall of the house.
which of course means it's making a mess inside the house too.
[you know like right on my cans of soda]
guess what I will be doing tomorrow?
should be a fairly easy job since I have a shut-off valve and a Union already installed [you know for this- the next time]
hopefully I can find one in stock.

My annual .22 BPCR silhouette and Boy's Rifle Match starts this Thursday. Much prep to do and I just can't put in a full day like I used to. Today I ran the string trimmer around all of the shooting positions, and under and around the rails and back stops. I use 4 ft. high sheets of 7 ga. steel painted white 5 ft. behind the rails mounted on cut down power poles. These make a spectacular back stop rather than a berm. The target contrast is beautiful against the white back stops. Because of the Wuhan flu last year we modified the course of fire and I did not string trim the back range last year. So...after string trimming I had to rake up all of the debris.

I was mowing the trail around the prairie yesterday and found a dead elm had fallen across the trail. I needed to cut it up to get it out of the way and to my surprise this red elm was dry and sound as a dollar. Whacking two pieces together sounded like bowling pins. So I cut it all into fire wood size pieces and split it and stacked it for camp fires this weekend. By the time I finished those chores I had about 5 hours in and was just toast. My wife returned from an out of State vacay with her cousin and after getting her car unloaded and laundry started we ran errands the rest of the afternoon. One of the errands was a stop at the discount liquor store. Their inventory is stunning, but having a bunch of guys around a camp fire mitigates against spending anything over 40 bucks for a 1.75 litre bottle. The best deal I found was George Dickel 12 year old Tennessee sour mash whisky for 36 bucks. I figure we can channel our inner Augustus MacCrae's.

There will be a lot of great food this weekend and some rather esoteric items as well. I have been promised a Haggis made with beaver, wild ramps, and wild rice. Sort of a Fur Trade Haggis if you will. Less adventurous but always appreciated will be home made buttermilk biscuits and spicy sausage gravy for Friday's breakfast. We are having BBQ catered in cooked on site for Saturday's Supper. The pit master will also smoke a 6 lb. nubby buck hind I am supplying. Oh and Thursday night we will have tacos made by a dear friend who is a 28 years Army veteran pilot who has made these tacos all over the world. When he had a taco party the price of admission was one beer. He said he never ran out of beer.

Once people start arriving all of the hard work will be forgotten and we'll let the good times roll. A month later, the same cast of characters will pull in and we will have a cast bullet shoot.

I'm whole again!! I just got my Warn M12,000 winch back on my truck. It was getting tired after 36 years of hard living.
I'd anticipated some down time rebuilding it, and purchased a Harbor Freight "Badlands" 12000 winch, to have something on the truck to use, if needed. I did indeed have to use it, once, and only once. Pretty obvious the designer of that winch has never used one, what a piece of junk.
Anyway, almost $800 later, and three weeks on the bench, I'm sporting an updated winch with new electronics, motor, drive shaft, and brake system. I'm a happy camper!

I can put up with paw prints on the door of my smoker. I grit my teeth and acknowledge the circle of life when I see the evidence of almost all of my tadpoles being eaten. The bird feeder cleaned out at night, a bit more annoying. But....after being warned by the hen red wing black bird that she was nesting nearby, I carefully brush hogged around her domicile with her 4 blue eggs. Checking on them and her the next day I see that all I managed to do was point out to Brer Coon where the nest was, he took care of the rest.

Did you know that if you hold the spot light in your off hand, and rest the forearm of the .222 against a porch post you can do credible work at a fair distance? I whistled to get the end I wanted pointed at me and managed to put one right between the green glowing orbs. Services will be held some time this morning.

We have four or five Eastern Phoebe's in a nest on top of the S-bend in one of the downspouts of our garage. They are pretty much ready to leave the nest. Coons aren't as big as a problem for nesting birds, as out resident black snakes. Currently, we have a 6-6 1/2 footer residing in our stacked firewood. He can be found sunning himself on top of it most afternoons. Several years ago, I found a black snake in a nest the phoebe built under my upper level back porch, on top of a 1/2 length of black pipe that feeds my gas B-B-Que grill. I only noticed it when I seen egg yolk dripping down a window, near it. I used a garden rake to remove the snake and relocate it. Was to late for the eggs but not for the phoebe, if and when it returned to the nest.

What was the issue with the HF version? They have a fantastic rep among the 4 wheel drive crowd so I'm surprised at your assessment. Personally, I like the idea of the old fashioned PTO winches myself. I gotten my electric way too hot a time or 2 already.

I've heard pretty much the same about HF winches as Rally said. Enough so that I would avoid them.

Actually made it to church yesterday! For once nothing in the way of an emergency or imperative family obligation interfered. No one is wearing a mask anymore, very refreshing! Spent the rest of the day mowing the lawn, doing some skid steer landscaping and cooking up some steaks and brats. I finally got the steak a tiny bit too rare for my tastes. Wasn't sure I could actually do that! "Cut the horns of, wipe it's butt and put it on my plate" was the mantra here for the past 3 decades. Good eating!

I have to put a few loads of barnyard scrapings in the raised beds and in some low spots around the yard. I have enough lumber left over to build several more beds. SWMBO and I both want to rebuild our herb gardens that have died off over the years. We have learned all mints need to go either in pots or in their own areas unconnected to anything else. When mint takes off, it takes over! She wants to find some heavy duty edging for her flower beds too, seems anything plastic (most we see available) lasts 2 years at the max and is never as high as she wants it.

I'm going to raid the used tire pile down at the town barn and try to find a 8.25-20 or 9.00-20 for my dump trailer. It's made up from a 1935-40 IHC dump truck, or so I'm told. Have to remove one u-joint and weld up the PTO shaft and them I can start hauling rock and fill...in my "spare time"???

As far as winches go, Thru farm work, fire service, 25+ years of towing and recovery.
Except for a odd 1920-30's something mechanical drive.
I have only used Ramsey, Hydraulic, PTO activated. Just what my bosses had on the trucks.
In the recovery service these winches were in daily use. Never had an issue, except the PTO cable wearing out and sticking, change out a guide roller, or cable, or hook.I have pulled fully loaded Box trucks out of ditches with those things. Have literally snapped cables, and ripped the winches part way loose from the mounts, broke my anchor feet, without damaging the winch.
Guess I am just spoiled.

Was getting ready to go out and stand the walls on the shed.
But along came the mowers cutting 5 yards around me at once.
The landlord has his fully owned lots mowed at one time. So my plans are cut short for a couple hours. I can handle mowing my own lot or even a couple acres with One mower by myself. But that much crap flying around, I just can not take. With me having the second covid shot 2 days ago and feeling a little funky already just not taking chances.
Oh well maybe this evening when my son gets home.

I have had Ramseys, Warn and SuperWinch winches. All where good and worked. Ooh I had a Mile Marker that was a tank as well!
I have looked at these HF winches for my SxS they offer a 4500 thats appealing but dont know much about them. Most use a 2500 or 3500 so when used should be used hard...
