Caught two just short Largemouths (14 & 14.75") on 6" Reef Runners (Pearl Orange Tiger) and good size Gar........Gar even broke water. Only the second time I've ever caught a Gar on a plug. Lost a very nice fish, Striper I presume, straightened the front and rear treble hooks on the same Reef Runner. The other three rods got zero action........two with Alabama Rigs (5 - 4.5" Shadalicious swimbaits) and the other with a different color Reef Runner.
Can we.... uh ... have a cast bullet convention out there please?

Dimmer, see you're from SE Michigan..............where we relocated from. Just a 13 hour drive. Norfork lake has 550 miles of shoreline without hardly any houses on the shore. Those few that are, are grandfathered in and it's (Mallard Point) a high rent district.

Lake is always high this time of year but getting back to normal, due to lack of rain this past month. Normal pool is 552' and we are currently at 568' or 16 feet above normal. Since this lake was created by flooding a river valley, banks are steep. You can frequently be in 150' of water, just 20 yards from the shoreline. One can judge depth of water by just observing the steepness of the bank...........steeper the deeper.
Beautiful pictures by the way. Relaxing.
Makes me want to be there with a pole in hand.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
Worked my butt off in the hot sun trying to find a line problem between the house and pool/dog shed. Finally ended up digging up the buried wire and determined it was somewhere under a few tons of rock and dirt that was excavated near the basement wall project. Oh well, I'm moving the outlet anyway so I at least got the power back to the dog shed so my old guy can have his fan on. Then I fixed my dump trailer which is nmade out of what I'm told is a 1937 dump truck body. Started loading with the skid steer and found out I'm about out of both gas and diesel! That gives me something to do in the morning...spend $2-300.00!!!!

Made several calls to the Governors office and legislature members. I'm getting really PO'd, never felt this way before.

Oh yeah, the seller accepted our offer on that house for my girls. Now the pain starts.

can't it just rain.
you know where the water falls gently from the sky.
does it always have to be escorted by 30 mph winds that swirl in from 3 different directions all at the same time.
just once it'd be nice to sit on the front porch and watch it rain without needing a plexiglass box to stay dry.

All I planned on doing was to clean out the gutter on the pole shed closest to the road. Full of magnolia leaves and twigs and water, and moss and rot. My honey came out to offer a hand, such as keeping the ladder from sliding and keeping me from falling. I hate that magnolia tree, don't belong in Wisconsin in the first place. Filthy tree, brittle, big leaves, hard to rake in Fall, and it has a bunch of dying branches. Sue said to me, "You can cut it down if you want to, it's not going to last much longer"

Grabbed the pole saw and started trimming. It had four trunks about 10" in diameter. Then the chain saw and the tractor. Threw a trap drag tied to a boat mooring rope up pretty high and got a good hook up and tied it to the Kubota. While I cut with the Stihl Sue kept tension on the last of the four trunks that was leaning toward the lean-to and my truck. She handled that chore perfectly, kept the rope tight and as soon as the tree started to move she backed slowly up and dropped it safely away from anything.

Cleaned up most of the debris by lunch time. Took showers and headed to the River for lunch in the hot rod. Came home and looked at the rest of the limbs and decided to clean it all up. Then mowed around the prairie, and a patch of field I maintain for paring equipment. Got all hot and dirty again. "Nother shower, and a 90 mile motorcycle ride on a gorgeous sunny day right around 80 degrees.

Very satisfying day, half work, half fun. Livin' the good life. A good ball game, my team winning handily, Ezra Brooks 99 proof and mint M&M's.

Magnolia trees don't belong in California, either. Part of my retirement side job is raking the leaves two trees drop from May till December.

Some of our short-distance get-away views:
A better view of the fire that almost crested the hill and headed toward the range. The furthest range is for the various state, county, and city law enforcement personnel. The public range is almost completely hidden by the hill.

Re-machining and scraping in the bed on my new 9x30 Chinese lathe. I bought this thing cheap as a project in a box but it was worse than I anticipated. The Grizzly and Precision Matthews lathes made from the same castings and sold for more than twice the money are evidently machined MUCH better even though they still benefit greatly from some tuning with a surface plate, straight edge, and hand scraper. This thing was simply unusable out of the crate but I was going to tear it down to parade rest and work it over anyway so doing a little extra milling and shaping before scraping isn't that big of a deal. At least the ground ways on top of the bed are dead flat and straight so I have something to work with.

Took out .0185" of taper on the underside of the front way and .009" on the back side way, an operation requiring three setups on each side since my mill table only travels 15" on the Y-axis. I got really good at tramming to .0002-3" over 14 or so inches. After that I scraped in the milled surface and got the top and bottom parallel to .0002" or less so the carriage won't bind anywhere in its travel with the clamps snug enough to keep it from shifting on the bed.

Last night I re-cut the way grooves on the carriage with my shaper and squared/flattened everything to the cross slide ways underneath. Now the carriage sits square and level on the bed. After that I scraped the carriage into the bedways for a 30-point contact.

Tonight I shaped down the bosses for the carriage clamps so they fit square and snug without shims.

Might go after a piece of 8" C-channel tomorrow as a base to bolt this thing to before I do too much more reconstruction. Still have to build an internal oil reservoir for the headstock and change it over to tapered roller bearings which will require sourcing some spindle oil seals. The whole thing is metric so I'm probably going to change all the leadscrews to imperial pitch and re-make the nuts, then turn off the metric dial letters and scratch in some imperial markings with the mill and dividing head. Fun little project if you have the tools to fix the dimensional issues. I'm looking forward to having 30" between centers and a 1.5" spindle hole.
