I wonder if the newspapers on the walls were an attempt to keep out the dust.

Early wall paper for the poorer folks. Chinking would leak a lot, paper on the inside to keep draft down. Used in mud huts instead of plaster.

Very common in KY when you could not afford tar paper under the boards and batten.

they are under the floor boards in my house, i'm sure as insulation from the unheated basement when the place was heated by coal.
