Glen,

Like my friend told me, if the rifling is a 1/2 mile from the end of the case neck, then what do you do ?

You're just about forced to rechamber to a longer round ( if one is available to you ) to clean everything up.

In my situation, I'm out $$$, but the end result when my gunsmith finishes his throating work will be a nice throat cut to spec. that fits my .30 cal. cast bullets like a hand in a glove.

If the rifling is way out in front of the case neck, one option is to re-chamber it to a larger cartridge -- the .44 Mag I mentioned above got rechambered to a .444 Marlin, and cleaned that mess up quite nicely!

And a lot of T/C 357 mag barrels are now 357 max barrels for that very reason and some of them still don't reach the rifling.

Actually, mine is now a .357 Hartley (think a .357 Herrett on the full-length .30-30 case), but your point is very well taken.

Talked with the gunsmith last week, he is working on it.
Maybe I'll have my barrel back in my hands soon ? ? ?

DANG! Know this is an OLD thread, but.... Looking at an as new 14" 30-30 bbl. Not a steal (reasonable) but think I am going to pass based on info here (do NOT need another project/money pit). AND I still have the 30 and 357 Herretts I HAD to have! AND yet to work them up! Luckily the 223 Bullberry and TC 7-30 Waters both shoot factory great, so know I can reload for them!

UP - DATE

Sorry to be late in up dating this one.
My problem with factory cut " zero throat " in my barrel was corrected by my gunsmith in Golden, CO.
I don't think I own a .30 cal. mould now that won't easily chamber in my barrel. Many of my .30 cal. cast rifle bullets are over 200 grs. in weight and have nose diameters of .301 and .302. After throating my barrel, all chamber smoothly with zero problems.

WOW !!!!!!!!!!! I'm a happy camper now.

Are you asking:

pistol frame, grips and fore end,
barrel, scope mounts, scope ?

If so, I'd say I'm pushing $900 on this one, possibly a bit more.

Been a long time, but I think I bought the barrel ( it had been used ) for $275 and paid about $75 + $24 shipping ( to and from the gunsmith ) to have the throating on the barrel done. I don't regret a penny of it ! !

That's actually either a tad cheaper or just about dead-on what a new MGM barrel would cost right now anyway, so you did OK regardless.

One cool thing about Contenders is that as long as you don't stop and add everything up, you can use denial to assuage your guilt of what you've put into one, because you can buy them a piece at a time - over time.;)

I was a bit surprised after I added up the first one I put together, but like @Ben , "don't regret a penny of it."
