Test PDF: Ruger SBH + Lil Gun

I've been having a devil of a time trying to get my Epson photo scanner to work since my computer's operating system has been upgraded. I.e., Mac no longer supports 32 megabit scanners (in favor of 64mb) and my scanner won't scan color positives (slides) and I suppose, negatives, which I no longer have. What I'm trying to do is determine whether the device is worth keeping or do I put it in the trash (btw, I've already spoken with Epson). Anyhow, here's a PDF, which the machine seems to reproduce OK, but let's see if it uploads first.

As for the load of Lil Gun, after reading all kinds of end of days warnings about it "over there,"I decided to try it in my Ruger 10.5" bbl'ed SBH. I chose a mild load and got pretty good results with none of the bbl. heating/gas cutting* some warned about. In fact, I think I could increase the charge by several grains and still have a safe load which may also be good in large rifle cartridges (e.g., .30-06) with CB's of course. Anyhow, here's the PDF (below):

*If you want to see how hot a bbl. gets and quickly, try loading the .44mag. with 32gr. FFFg blackpowder and firing six shots in ~1 minute: Same accuracy as with smokeless (with the same CB), but plenty of heat!

I use a scanning program called Vuescan. It supports a lot of old scanners that do not have current drivers.

Here is a page from the website where you can search to see if your model Epson is supported.

https://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/epson.html

The software is available for free trial, so you could try it first and make sure it works with your scanner. He has been around forever, and frequently updates his software. I have been a happy customer, as I have old film scanners that wouldn't work otherwise.

Hope that helps.

I have had recent impacts with the engineered obsolescence built into all of these fun expensive tech toys that started their intrusions into our lifescapes in the 1990s. Me with computers is like giving a Glock to an orangutan, and that is a best-case scenario. I seem to understand mechanical devices almost innately, but electronics and digital tech elude me deftly. I didn't have any sort of cell phone other than my on-call bureau-owned Nextel from 2000 forward, then Marie got me a flip-phone in early 2003 that has served wonderfully until a couple weeks ago, when it started dying. WTH, Verizon was going to stop supporting its carrying system in September 2022, and we haven't had a hardline phone since 2014. Gotta have a cell phone. ^%$#!!

SWMBO handles most of the tech questions at our abode, capably assisted by daughter Melissa for back-up on the high-techier matters. Our kids are better with digital matters by accident than people my age are on purpose, and Marie runs a close second to Melissa's skill set. They rock.

I can't/don't. I am relegated to the vehicle stuff, gun acquisition and maintenance, cartridge assembly & bullet production. I like these niches, they are well within my strike zone.

Two days ago, the 21st Century gob-smacked me once again. Marie was tasked with finding a replacement cell phone for me, and I asked that she keep in mind my Rip Van Winkle status within this era we occupy. As is her M/O, she ignored my modest request enthusiastically and found me a front-runner Samsung model S22 Ultra. It is a NICE bit of kit, but this being my first SmartA--Phone I am a bit overwhelmed by its potential, much of which I cannot yet fathom. Marie spoils me rotten yet again, as I do her. She is a peach. Now I need to learn how to herd this beast, to justify her faith in my ability to adapt to the 21st Century. I hope the learning curve is banked correctly.

Now I need to learn how to herd this beast,
You know that piece of kit you now have has more computing power than all that NASA used to put men on the moon don't you? There is no way in hell you are going to "Herd that beast". The most you can hope and pray for that you can coexist with it. I feel your pain.

My FIL, now 83, uses a smart phone regularly. Even uses facetime to talk to my wife.

Not saying it isn’t with some user/phone interface situations but overall the user understands he is the less competent part of the duo. He does claim the phone is haunted from time to time.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
My advice, based on the "smartphone" I now use- don't try to figure the whole thing out. Delete all the shopping crap, the game stuff, the dozens of nonsense type things that you will never, ever use. Set up the phone part and the texting part. Set up the camera so you can take pics of what something looked like BEFORE you took it apart. Find out how to use the flashlight- you'll need that! Maybe have someone show you how to use the GPS/roadmap thing and how to store actual likeable music on it for those times you don't want to listen to hockey or French rap on the car radio (there are times it's all that comes in up here) and find out how to access the doo hicky that helps locate the phone when you set it down and forget it. And buy an armored case and a holster for it!!!!! I have yet to sit on my phone, lose it or leave it in a vehicle because it always goes in the holster. And if it's in an armored case, you won't crack the screen if you drop it!

My 2 cents, and worth just what you paid for it. Oh yeah, and turn the volume to max and pick a distinctive ring tone that is annoying enough to be heard above all the normal background noise. She got you a phone, now she'll expect you to answer it!!!

CZ93x62- I'm with you in your feelings about mechanical verses digital tech.
I will say that there are some useful applications for a smart phone, but as Bret accurately points out, a lot of it can be ignored.

The more you use it, the more comfortable you will become with it. AND, you get to decide how much you want to use.

The map/GPS/navigation features can be handy, but I wouldn't rely on that as my sole source of navigational support.
The compass application (which includes Latitude/Longitude and elevation) can be useful.
The camera/video is nice. One of the uses is photographing something small and enlarging the image so you can see it. The other day I needed to remove a set screw on a faucet handle. There was no way to see the screw head, even with a light and mirror. Two seconds with the camera on the phone and I identified it as an Allen head set screw. Problem solved.
The audio recording function can be useful.
The calculator function may seem like elementary school stuff but it is surprisingly useful at times.
I don't need to be connected to the internet 24/7 but I do like having a few news webpages that I can access from my phone. One is local and the others are national and international sites.
Same holds true for e-mail access. E-mail on a phone can be useful or it can be an electronic leash; it's up to the user.
The flashlight function is nice. Not a great primary light but it sure is nice to have.
I do NOT use the calendar function on the phone, I am a paper calendar guy. I know how to use it and sometimes I will look at it to see what day of the week a particular date falls on, but I refuse to keep my schedule on that electronic calendar. The younger people around me don't understand why I will not succumb to the electronic calendar but they are the ones that are always late or AWOL.
I'm not a huge fan of texting but I will say there are times that it is useful.
Turn off or opt out of EVERYTHING that is related to advertising, tracking, shopping, games, etc.
Oh, you can also make and receive phone calls on the device .....:)

I have lived with that ANSWER THE PHONE expectation since 2003, no concept resistance to that. These monsters can also track my location, so stealth-mode gunshop visits are history. She doesn't mind the visits, as long as I bring home something for her to play with. She gives that Glock 43 "The Giant Eye" when I take it along on shopping trips, "That would fit in my purse so nicely....."

PAWS OFF, ESPOSA!

The tracking is up to you. That can be turned off.

The domestic tranquility, ......well that is something entirely different. However, when you find a good woman (and they are not easy to find) my advice is, "surrender early and surrender often" ;)
