The 350 Legend

I have read the Winchester has rolled out this chambering at the SHOT Show this week. 223 Rem head size and case length, blown out straight and a 357" bullet seated. I am guessing it will fit and function in existing AR-15/Mini-14 magazines. I don't trust manufacturer velocity claims for its bullet weights--does anyone have any real-world info on this critter?

This is a new one for me Allen. If it had a rim it might be a candidate for rebore/rechamber for my Handi .223 heavy barrel.

It basically is a rimless Max, same as the 45 Raptor is a rimless 460 S&W Magnum. If Winchester was smart, the 350 Legend would be identical to the Max and use the same load and pressure data, although I have an idea that it's going to be amped up to the 52K ceiling of the AR-15 to get the mostest ballistics.

So, the old 351 Win is back with an updated twist ? Could be interesting for an AR.

This brought a smile.

Winchester ad copy claims a muzzle speed of 2325 FPS with a 150 grain deer load they have cobbled up. Roughed-up calcs indicate about 1900 FPS for a 180 grain bullet and 1700 FPS for a 200 grain bullet. Cherokee nailed it--351 Winchester +P. Barely. Don't swap off your 35 Remingtons or 38/55s.

Newer powders probably help get the velocity up, as well.
Funny how the ballistics of some of the newer rounds with new powders are compared to older rounds with old powders.

well I ain't gonna try running my 351 up to match a 357 max.
the little I did see had them claiming better down range energy than a 30-30, but no details on barrel length or gun type.
I'm having a hard time seeing Winchester bringing out an AR style rifle, but I could see this in a bolt gun or their SXR.

...or in an FA with moon clips.

Has to be targeted at the AR market but I have to say what we've seen of the launch, the marketing kinda sucks.

they seem to be keeping it quiet for some reason.
I wonder if some TV show has an exclusive, or a magazine is waiting for some guns to 'review'.
drop this at the shot show, get it on the cover of Rifle/shooting times, and have ol' tom scouten drop it on shooting USA all in the same month.
then get some hunting articles printed up in the various magazines through Feb/March, and drop the rifle/ammo on the market around Easter. [you know when tax returns come in]

I've always thought that 35 Remington would work really well for an AR. Hmmm, there is a 35 HRT cartridge out there. It should be around the 35 Rem level. Must investigate!

35-caliber AR-variants based on the 7.62x39 abound, it sounds like a really good idea considering the availability of good conversion magazines. I came across some info recently indicating 200 grains at a little over 2100 fps or 180 at 23something from such a wildcat.

Quiet from corporate types... bugs ain't gone, support products ain't ready, or back pedaling to fix issues.

I dunno, I see it like this- we got 38spcl, 9mm, & 357, all these others get dumped in what I call the super 9's. They maybe great, but it's guna be an expensive bumpy ride most likely.

I put an ar15 upper together chambered in 357ar. It's a 223 case necked up to 358 and trimmed to 1.605. I'm using starline 223 basic brass. Its built for a friend in Iowa to meet their straight wall case restrictions.
So far, using lil gun. I've got a 180 gr speer hcfp up to 2215 fps. The 200 ftx has gotten up to 1968 for me loaded with H110.
Since the cases shorten a bit when they're blown out from .373 to .380, I'm looking forward to trying some Winchester cases, although the basic brass headspaces fine after resizing brings them back to 1.593"20181224_123231.jpg

Iowa didnt have a deer rifle season, Bill. They recently open one to listed straight wall cartridges only.

Can't hunt with a rifle in Iowa!? Boy what is with that? Very strange, never heard of such
a thing other than in Illinois, or Indiana of someplace like that. I that that was a back east idea.

They've long had muzzleloader & shotgun slug seasons. It was a hard fight for them to gain the straight wall regs. Glad they did.
