The concentrated new mould thread .

We seem to buy , sell , swap into a lot of new to us moulds and new new and occasionally a one off wonder . We also get some lost to time moulds too .
What do have ?

This is a Rapine 457-201 . Other information says Rapine use the diameter - weight number system ...... This one casts 50/50 at .458-.460 and at 249 and 251 gr .
I actually didn't find much about Rapine other than that they catered to the BP cartridge clans .

I plan to use this as a light weight 45-70 bullet . Similar RNFP in 1000 fps 45 Colts are quite good on calm hogs to at least 50 yd a little faster like 2000 fps they should do well beyond 150 yd and be fairly easy on the shooter .
The roll pins we're replaced with screws and the seen screws replaced with a more proper long he head set screw like RCBS .

I have a Ideal 429422 mould. It’s a HB version of the 429421. Prevent with square lube groove. I was told Elmer had them put the HB in so he could pack more powder in. Not sure if that’s true but still neat none the less.

I love casting with the old Lyman and Ideal hollow point moulds. Once you hit a rhythm, you can make quite a few good bullets. I have not cast with this one for years as I mainly shot them in my Contender 30 Carbine barrel and it is now gone. May have to make a few for the M1 Carbine.

A Cramer #B4
It casts .287-130 , gas check design , long nose , short shank .
The other B's are .277-9 .

How does the HB pin work on the 429422? Looks in the pic like it is just laying there, but must
be retained somehow. A pin in the back side, unseen in the photo? I think the HB was for
fitting oversized throats.

My Minie mould has an oversized screw head and a snap ring on the pin . The ring just slips under the screw head .

Has anyone here messed with the Harvey Prot-X-Bore moulds? I have a 429508 hollow point that I would like to try if I could find some washers.

Ok, I figured about what it has, just a headed pin/screw on the back to keep it from
falling all the way out.

As to Harveys...never have tried one. The issue would be where to get the zinc washers today.
I suppose you could make some sort of a punch and punch out copper or aluminum or zinc
if you could find it in proper sheet thickness.

I suppose I could cast some up and PC them. I vaguely remember a thread on the Cast boolit sight saying that someone was still making them. I’ll have to do some searching.

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
You see the Protex bore washers on Ebay from time to time. Always looked like a really complex, PITA answer in search of a problem to me.

Hawk bullets has them. There’s quite the write up on them. I guess the zinc acts as the gas check and the lubricant. The zinc coats the barrel as the boolit goes through. Not cheap though at about 5cents apiece shipped.

I always figured I'd burn my fingers trying to get the little washers in the mold while its still hot enough to cast good bullets.

The original literature called for putting them in with tweezers. You should be able to make fifty in an afternoon.
