The Ideal Cast Bullet Rifle

I have both the Saeco #315 and their copy of the old RG-4 molds. I seem to remember that both do engrave on the nose portion of the bullet very well. Think I have a few of each already cast but not sized. Will have to check on those two. Another mold I have is an original NEI mold made by Walt Melander when his operation was in Oregon. That mold was listed by him as the 180 DD. 180 grain 30 cal cast bullet with a wedding ring just where the nose of the bullet transitions into the straight section of the body of the bullet. Haven't thought about the last three until the Saeco #315 was mentioned by Spindrift. Come to think on it, I have an old Winchester post '64 match rifle with the factory barrel and I'll have to see what I can scrounge up as far as scope mounts, rings and bases I may have for that rifle. Still doing my outside yard work and when I come in and rest too tired to do anything. But so far my efforts to clean up all the chicken trees, brush and poison ivy ( long sleeve work shirts and heavy gloves) are starting to look good. The Sako 75 previously has always shot very well with jacketed bullets and my dwindling supply of LC63 M72 match ammo. You'd think 57 year old ammo wouldn't shoot as well being that age but have gotten some very nice groups with the Sako. Frank

BTW. my savage 340 in 30-30 is not all that great for cast bullets. Feeding is the issue. I dont know how to describe this as I am no gunsmith and don't have a good enough grasp on chamber terminology. ... but the beginning of the chamber is just 'sharp' and narrowish. Never have been able to get cast bullets to feed without marring. However, with single loading it shoots excellent little groups.

That's one of those things that makes the single-shot 30/30 the ideal cast bullet rifle for me.

Right after the single-shot 357 Mag.

Not being smug. That I can shoot about any bulet shape, weight or seated length over any reasonable charge make this platform my personal favorite.
That's why I'll never sell my Savage 24 30wcf/20ga. :)

I had one of those as a kid and couldn't wait to get rid of that ridiculous-looking, fish-nor-fowl embarrassment and get a REAL rifle and a REAL shotgun!

Now, I would not be the least bit ashamed to carry one. I may actually have gotten smarter with age, but fat lotta good it does me besides to rub regret in my nose.

I'd hang onto one too. Those are cool guns. Mine was a 30/30 over twenty also.

Ok Since this thread has run awhile: I recently started a dialog with the Savage Custom shop!
Plan on the table is for a 30 WCF chambered Single Shot Bolt action in a 30" stainless barrel cast bullet rifle, In a full bench rest stock as my range / target gun!
We are working with twists now. Heck of a lot of cast cast bullet moulds in 30 caliber!
Could keep me satisfied for the duration of my shooting life!

shouldn't be too hard for them, they made the heavy barrel single shot model-12 in 220 swift for a while.
a 30-30 barrel would be easy enough to screw in place.

:headbang:

I called them up 4-5 years ago, talked to the gal that all the internet forums said was the guru for taking custom orders and she told me they cannot do 30wcf!

I settled for my TR94 with the 26" barrel. But that turned out to have a barrel of 0.310. I was minutes away from sending that baby into JES to have it rebored into some kind of 35cal. But then I found how easy powder coating was.

Well it's good to know that the savage custom shop dream is still alive.

Have a 6.8 or X39 bolt head installed and use 30 or 35 Rem brass .
This fun spending your money for you .

It's just a little relief cut for the .473 head anyway .
