The Mosins

I received the 2 mosins in a cardboard box. No furniture and multiple screwups by the original owner but that is another story.
Both barrels were removed and a chamber cast made.
Both barrels were faced to correct headspace problems.
Both barrels were slugged at the muzzle, at the chamber, and full legnth..
The barrels had been chopped (literately) with a chop saw removing 3 inches on the M44.
I built stocks for both (sporter) and built muzzle brakes to reduce some of the recoil.
Sorry Ben I am not a great craftsman like you so they are utility stocks only!
Those are the major works for them so far.
The 91/30 will hold 1 1/2 inch group at 100 meters using the load mentioned in the previous post but not the shorter barrel M44
so that is why I am trying other loads and bullets.
It is getting harder to do as at 85 and a stroke survivor I am just most of the time trying to keep it together.
Thanks fiver for the insight , will give your loads a try next range trip

that sounds like some of the rescues i picked up at shows in the 90's.
one had a box magazine fit in where a removable magazine was supposed to go, they just slid it in place and welded a piece of metal over the bottom.
amazingly it actually works, unfortunately it's a 284 win magazine for a model 100 and is/well was, worth more than the rifle.

just as an aside.
you can get as much velocity with 18grs of 2400as you can with 28-29 grs of 4895.
the 4895 will prefer a bit of Dacron to keep the velocity variations down, but the 2400 just needs to be positioned consistently in the case.
the recoil is more of a boomp than a thump.

Jim,
Depending on what you like to do with your mil surps:
I for one shoot all mine ....cast only in the "low node" under 1400 fps: I can shoot them very accurately for a few pennies a shot and not get the wear and tear on my body! As many as I like per range session!

For the most part I shoot most of mine like Jim,
with an occaisional quirk, to go up to 1800 or so,
but most are under the 1500-1600 fps bracket.

The photos are not up to my normal quality as my pro grade camera took a dump but here are a couple of pics of the M44 that I got as a basket case and have with my limited abilities rebuilt.
The stock is Bannister grade maple from the hardware store. the tip is some rosewood my son in law gave me. It is steel bedded and the barrel free floated.
The scope is a Simmons 4x pistol scope , I forget who made the scope mount but it is probably in my notes somewhere if anyone is interested

Ben I built the stock using hand tools only ,(well I did cut out the basic shape with a saber saw) as an outlet for my frustrations. Wife has demensia and sometimes it gets the best of me so I take it out on wood.
The chisels for the barrel channel were homemade as I could not find what I wanted.

Thanks for looking

Jim

if that scope was back in the normal position that would be the best looking Moisin I ever seen.
actually it still is.

Thanks Ben.
Coming from you that is a great complement as I have seen a lot of your work.

That definitely qualifies as successfully making a silk purse out of
a sow's ear.

Well done. And that shooting accuracy is up to any task you might as it to do.
