Think I now have a Jap Arisaka!

Hmmmm. I have absolutely no interest in powder coating bullets, but I can see where it might be a great help with a "skinny" mounld you want to work right in a particular gun. FWIW, there are usually several 270 moulds from Lyman or RCBS (and a few others) on Ebay.

not just a particular gun.
I spent the better part of a week working over a lyman 4 cavity 429667 mold getting it up from nearly 428 to the 430 I need.
luckily I don't have a marlin needing 434 or something equally as silly.
had powder coating been in my pocket at the time I wouldn't have had to go through all those measurements and lapping and cleaning and pouring and lapping and measuring and cleaning gyrations.
I could have just made some bullets, run them through the oven and then the lube sizer.

I have a sporter version of the Jap Type I (Italian) in 6.5mm, that came with a serious gap in the two piece stock. I filled the gap with Accra Glas and clamped it down. It worked. I then refinished the stock with BlO. I first stained the stock with leather dye. It came out well.

Charles,
Nice looking rifle. Is your Receiver polished bright or is that just the lighting?

The metal is blue with the receiver and barrel being in good decent shape. The bottom metal not so much. However it is not highly polished and the lighting is mostly the cause.

Well today was the day I finally got to try it out! Took it to the range this moring ( 38 degrees and wind blown rain...yuck!)
I had my 20 rounds of freshly formed brass from 35 Rem cases....so the key was to blow them out and see if the old (geisha) girl would shoot!
Interesting feeling when I sat down at the bench with it knowing the last time it fired was in the Korean war!
Even though the bullets were really seated out very far to touch the lands in the worn throat they loaded easily from the magazine.
First shot from the clean barrel went quite a bit to the right of the 4inch square black bull I was using at 50 yards ( but pretty much centered in the vertical) It took me 5 more shots to understand the sights....which was in the lowest sight (not the elevator sight) This is a very wide V sight which was quite blurry to my eyes & that matched up with the reverse V front sight! Not my favorite sight picture:confused:!
After 6 bullets went down range I had 14 left so I tried for 2 groups of 7 shots each.
Below are the last 2 groups Nothing to write home about but good enough to make me excited! The brass as quite small for the chamber ( much changed number wise on the brass now after firing) not to mentioned this wasn't any real load..... just a safe guess! (7.3 gr Unique: had some minor tipping I can see)

Bottom target was the next 7 shots and top target was the last 7 shots ( I can see that one shows I couldn't maintain a consist sight picture due to fog rolling in)
All in all I'm very happy with the first 20 shots in this rifle's "new life" Now I can't wait to fine tune everything!
Shooting this old one was a real treat

Thanks fiver, I'm pretty excited. Just wish I could get that front sight to drift a bit . Had it sitting in Koil for a few hours but can't drift it to correct my windage issue. It is really frozen

I can't recall what the issue front sight looks like on an Arisaka, but if you can find someone with a Borwnells sight pusher, the older ones anyway, they will provide a heck of a lot of torque without mashing things up. A little heat will also sometimes make all the difference.

OK.... Used Brad suggestion of ATF & Acetone and this morning I was able to drift it to where I think it needs to be.That stuff works!
As to the brass it looks pretty good however I think I could use some more powder to up the pressure. The numbers I'm getting from the cases are good but I think they need a bit more expansion to come close to my chamber cast #'s. Because the bullets I used had a long bore rider nose I had to set them out too far to engage the rifling In other words the didn't have much time in the neck

Was wondering if any of you folks would know what Receiver sight may fit this old beast. Haven't been too successful on line .
Would a Redfield or Lyman regular SMLE receiver sight work on a Jap model 38?
Thanks

A Lyman SMLE receiver sight will work. I have one mounted on a T99 Arisaka. If you are looking for a range and a hunting rifle I would recommend the SMET version which is the SMLE with Target Knobs for E and W adjustments.

Well I did some more shooting today with the Arisaka. I think things are looking better.
I had my 20 cases shot from last time made from 35 Rem brass. Since these had been shot 1x from last time I didn't even resize them.
I also had a bunch of .243 Win brass that I successfully swaged the cases down to fit the 6.5 x 50 ! This was thanks to Brad who worked up a swage pass thru die for me! I will not get into all the steps of this process right now but let us just say it is a real labor of love to get that brass down to fit this rifle! I started out using .308 win but had better luck with the .243 ( not to mention more of the same headstamps)

Also I had bought a cheap'o Lee 277-135 bullet mould ( .277" is the max diameter of the rifles worn throat) This mould actually drops a tad over .277".... so I had to size them back to . 277 PC'd them and again resize to .277"
So all I had to do is expand the necks of the cases to fit these fat bullets! I did not seat the bullets very deep in the case because there was already a big jump to get in the throat! I also swithched to Red Dot powder ( 5.0 Grains ).

So Here are two of the three targets I shot today ( The third one I tried 7.0 gr American Select with this 277 bullet but nothing interesting happened Think I need a higher load)
The first group was 1.5" the second was 1.75":
Swaged cases UT necks.jpg
From 35 Rem cases 1x.jpg

These were shot at 50 yds.
I have never been very good with V notch military open sights so I think if I had a receiver sight I may do better.

All in all I do not have the ideal bullet & I do not have the bullets set into the rifling like I would like....but I'm feeling much better about this rifle already.

The history of this rifle puts it being made in the time period of before WWI Maybe it saw service in that time, in WW II also and later to be given up to an American GI in Korea!
For me to get it shooting again is a real thrill!

Good results, for sure. Well done, sir. Is proper brass entirely unavailable, or just
outrageously expensive?

Does yours have a peep type middle sight like my 7.7 Jap 99 does, or an open notch
like everyone else uses? I got very good results with my 7.7, was surprised how much I
liked that odd sight.

Bill,
Commercial Arisaka 6.5 x 50 brass is far too undersized! ( made to fit every chamber) I wanted brass to fit my chamber & I can get away with a head size of .458" That is large by commercial standards!

As to the sight it is a wide V Sure wish I had one of those mod 99 long peep sights!
Soon I will be drilling it for a lyman 48 or Redfield Receiver sight I may even tap out the front sight & replace it with a lyman 17 Globe & aperture front disk! This is how my GEW 98 is set up!
Think that comes from my childhood BB gun! It was a Daisy Target Special It had Receiver sights and an aperture Front sight!
I wore that little gun out twice! It is now in it's 3 rebuild!:)
