Those that know 45-70 ....

I'm currently torn by 3 moulds .
Lee 457-450F 2C , I have a single 457-340 on hand and there's too much of the 405 in the case .
458193 is the desired mould but it appears to only be available in a single .
The NOE SC460-425 of course meets all of my wants but it has the crimp groove above the top lube groove and of course is 20 gr heavy but there is a 2+2 w/w/o GC RG available with 12 pins so the 20 gr is moot if it will shoot like the salvage bucket 457193s do .

So any input to swing the vote is appreciated .

None of the above?

I would go with one of the following. Either one will do all a 45-70 can do. From mild to wild, these will handle it.

Given a choice I would go with the Accurate mold, better construction in my opinion. I really like Tom's brass moulds. Well, Tom's molds I should say.

If you want HP, get the long blocks and Erik might be able to HP an Accurate Mold (mould) for you inset-bar style.

that negative tolerance above the crimp groove is what makes this mold a winner.
the 45-70 is the original 'new style' no throat having chambering.
if you get a win or browning or miroku made 86 type rifle you'll find they have been cut to strict tight saami throat tolerances.

I'd opt for a G/C non G/C version

Working in a Remlin 1895G 2011 vintage . Everything so far falls into the if it feeds it fits class even with paper and the 458-340F long . It has a proper leade and throat .

It's looking like the NOEs are winning out .

Either of those bullets I showed should work well in a Marlin. I use a very similar bullet in mine.
Load them with 24 gr of 2400 for every day shooting or deer to realistic ranges.
I used mine, a plain base, with a heavier charge of 322 to good effect on a couple black bears now working as rugs.
Just my opinion but a gas check is not often really needed on a 45-70 bullet. Most of us don't need a 400 gr bullet at 2000 fps. More important, most of us don't ever want to shoot them. It gets ones attention right quick. Been there, done that. Not any more.

Yep. My Marlin has cut me twice. I hold it rather losers when shooting the 2400 load and when I step up to the 322 load I have forgotten to hold it tight. Scope got me two years in a row that way.
The 322 load was running 1650 which is about all the more I want.

For hunting, I am old fashioned, and a traditionalist. Like the old Gould HP.
Long for Marlin, perfect for #1 Ruger, as is the 420gr OHAS, also to long for
the Marlin. The 457124 Lyman at 385 gr, has often proven to be most
accurate with both Unique and 2400 loads.

My Marlin will easily feed a 457122 HP but they cast way too small for best results. I also prefer the luxury of a 6 cav mould over a single cav.

My #1 Ruger shoots the 457122HP well, at .458. Slow casting, but
worth it to me. Different horses and different jocky's are what make
a horse race. The mold is Brads by the way, has been more or less
on loan for the last few years.

Things happen to,for me with reason 7 for 10 .
After all the mucking around and research/searching and fence sitting it all fell in my lap .
A 405 HB was suggested elsewhere , the 457-340F was revisited on the range ...... Something I don't like about it but I don't know what it is .....
Both became available for $40 delivered with the 340 being a double .

Midway had the Lyman 458193 single in a clearance sale and 3 other items I've been seeking for some time . So that fell in the basket too......

With fingers crossed on the Lyman ,I'm off .

I'm sure that once a load is worked out the 50 set sessions will be over ......Right ? So it's not such a big deal that it is a single for the Lyman . Besides 1 cavity reduces the number ways I can get variations .

you can turn out a surprising number of bullets with a single cavity mold.
I make enough to keep both my 8 mauser and 32 win going from the same 1 cavity mold.

I have a couple of others , a 454424 for example but the NOE 5C sure cuts down on time to feed the hungry 92s ,1917s and RBH .
The random salvage lead bucket of the 193s looks like it will work and with good QC I should be good to go with my own . That will give me 3 proper bullets plus an ROA 220 conical and a paper patched 350 . That should keep me busy for 6-7 months .

Probably still have 12-14 single cav molds. They get used once in awhile, but
the 6 cav. lees get more workout more often.
