California's Central Coast Amid The Insanity
Saw an originally red but now faded to a dull pink 356 Porsche ragtop Monday. Not a ground up restoration. Not a kit. In a way it's refreshing to see a classic car that's a daily driver and not one that's been restored to a condition that it never was, to begin with.

But, man, oh, man that polished aluminum Morgan I saw Tuesday was an entirely different matter. Still wooden framed, but with aluminum coachwork rather that steel.

Would never have a red vehicle most especially in the CA sun. Red oxidizes faster than any other color as all those pink used to be red vehicles attest to.

Remember panel trucks that tradesmen used instead of pickups?
Like suburbans, and carry-alls? One of the neighbor gave his son a '53 Ford panel that he made into nice little camper for hunting and fishing.

Early in 1977, I purchased a Chevy panel truck (400 V-8) with Beauville trim in the cab. Did my own conversion for camping. We got married the end of August. Took three weeks and drove out to Yellowstone on honeymoon. Camped, most of the time. I've owned Chevy vans since then. Won't travel any other way. Currently, own two 3/4 ton full size passenger vans. One is outfitted for camping. Limo (dark) tinted glass, all the way around, on both. I can carry as much as Cindy's Colorado pickup with extended bed. Only limitation would be height wise.

BTW, the full size Chevy passenger van has twice the cargo space of a Suburban and is/was $10,000 less. And they are rarely stolen.

the body shop guy here in town has one almost just like that, only in a much lighter green color.

anyway I seen the dumbest/coolest thing the other day.
a guy converted a school bus into a woodie camper van type outfit complete with wooden doors, which had a screen door inside it, on both the side and back doors that I could see.
I wanted to go look inside it since I could see a wood dashboard from where I was, but he was pulling out of the fuel island.

Did you all see the picture of the Guatemalan color guard, that greeted Camel Ah, and their chrome gas cylinder Garands?

Whar be the cannon?
I am a member of a Mardi Gras Krewe and I made two “cannons” for my float from pvc pipes as the shell and galvanized iron pipe as the chamber/barrel inside the shell. They fired black powder blanks in 12ga shells I loaded with cotton balls soaked in saltpeter and then dried as the wad. The pvc shell was tapered by using lengths of pipe in diminishing diameters. Big blast and a cloud of smoke and lots of fun…ARRGH!

RB,
Thanks for the mention of the Greasy Grass.

We visited the battleground about six or seven years ago. I was fairly familiar with the layout of the land and the sequence of the major aspects of the battle, but actually being there, and imaging viewing it all through the eyes of the participants on both sides, gave me a better perspective and appreciation of the various stages of the battle. Since then I've done a lot of research, and armed (unintended pun) with that knowledge would like to re-visit the site someday.

If you are ever on I-90 in the very Southeast part of Montana I highly recommend you visit the site.

I can recommend the "7th Ranch RV Camp" as the place to stay if RV'ing. New park, super nice folks and reasonable rates.

Good to know.

We were driving the car after visiting my Viet Nam buddy who lives in Wisconsin. I didn't know that the battlefield was open to visitors, or would've planned on a much longer stay. As it was, we were on a schedule to get to a Billings motel.

Avoid the Crow Indian "Casino, gas station, restaurant, motel" as in the 20 years since it was build, it is all now a dump. It is the one right by the National Park entrance.

"OK, OK, I'm going as fast as I don't want to go!"
My youngest son has an RX8 he just bought to build into a drift car. We live just a couple miles from Willow Springs racetrack. See his latest video here:

As for me, I'm working on a '65 Fairlane 500.

I'll post pics soon of that build. Just got it fired up after 8 years of sitting in my barn because I can finally afford to stuff 15k into restoring it.

It's in the garage now and I'm prepping it for paint.

50 or 51 years, can't remember which, since I visited the Little Big Horn Battlefield. I remember being shocked at how open the ground was, with the exception of area along the river.
