Trap for a BB Gun

My grandson Trevor got a nice BB Gun for Christmas.
He lives in town and really doesn't have a safe place to shoot his new gun.
I decided to make him a " Trap ".
Not only will it catch 100 % of his BB's, but the top is removable and
he can drop in a magnet in the bottom of the trap and pick up everyone of the
BB's and recycle them.
The trap has a heavy gauge rubber " curtain " that is positioned about
3/4 ths of the way to the rear of the trap. The BB's will hit the rubber curtain
and fall to the floor of the trap for collection later.
He can shoot cheap paper plates held in position with " push pins ".
I really do wish that I'd had one of these when I was a kid.
Tell me what you think ?

There is a rubber mat that is located about 3/4 ths of the way back in the trap.

Another look at the mat :

The trap is portable and has a carrying handle.

I figure one of these will make retrieving the BB's a simple and quick matter.

Very Neat , Ben! He is going to love it. I was fortunate as a child to have my Dad buy me a Daisy "target special" complete with Receiver sights and a globe front sight with different inserts! I guess that is why many of my rifle now wear the same sighting combo!
Darn thing was amazingly accurate. However I had my share of neighbor complaints! That wouldn't have happened with that nice backstop!
Good thing is I never shot my eye out!;)

I had something similar for the kids when they were younger.
I hung a chunk of carpet in theirs.
only my carpentry isn't so square and the bottom tilted a bit I just drilled a hole in the back corner of the low side and put a can under there and it collected most of the bb's.
it wasn't intentional but it worked out.

Looks like it'll do the job, Ben.

As a kid, I had to work and save and buy my own BB and pellet guns.

And I bet that you took much better care of them knowing that you were the one who worked and bought them.

Depending upon the skill level of the shooter, I have had a BB bounce off a hard surface and come back over the rear sight into my glasses lens. You might consider a layer of 1/4 inch foam rubber on the front just to give it a dead soft surface to strike and reduce bounce back. If he is wearing shooting glasses, you may not need the foam after all.

About to make one for a grand nephew who got a BB rifle from some nutball great uncle
of his this Chritsmas. Since he is only 5, I will use pop cans strung on a horizontal wire
as reactive and easily replacable targets. At that age, penetrating a pop can, and seeing the
target spin are huge, having taught a few nephews at that same age 20-25 years ago.

I am going cheap......corrugated cardboard box, carpet scrap in the rear, a piece of heavy wire
from political campaign yard signs across the box. Still just in my head. He and family are
coming out to the cabin in Feb to play in the snow, so will have it then to shoot indoors, and he
can take it home.

Ben, that is perfect for an older kid who will be satisfied with the accomplishment of a good
group. In my experience, the younger once need more immediate gratification of a can falling,
plinking, spinning, etc. Your design is really going to be durable. Heck, with an angled steel plate,
it could be a .22 trap.
