Trimming 9mm Luger brass

This is NOT to wade into the heated discussion over trimming or not trimming 9x19.

Redding 9MM Luger Trim Die [Custom! 5-6 WK wait... before Red Death ]
Trim Die 83712 - Custom
Extended Shellholder 11513 - Custom

RCBS Trim Die for 9mm Luger 20565 [discontinued]
Extended shellholder 57171-Ext SH-16 [discontinued]

Forster Original Case Trimmer Note! Requires short base 4⅝" long (p/n CTB102)
Case Trimmer Collet #2 – CT2002
Case Trimmer Pilot #351 – CT1351

Note: The CTB102 DOES exist, and YES, you need it. It is hard to find on Forster's own site, which should show how widely it was used.
Note: Collet #2 is used only with Original and Power Case Trimmers, NOT with the Classic Case Trimmer.

Lee Quick Trim
9MM LUGER QT DIE BODY 90032
Deluxe Quick Trim Case Trimmer 90437 [trims to length, chamfers inside and outside]
Value Quick Trim Case Trimmer 90386 [trims to length only]

Note: the Deluxe Quick Trim case trimmer uses only one size of the male chamfer blade, but there are two sizes for the outer chamfer. My SWAG is the Large Female Cutter for Quick Trim is what you need.

Note: Pacific made the original long ago.

Apropos of probably nothing... I don't know of a PPC competitor that trims their brass before reloading for their 9mm pistol, not even for the 50 yard stages. The X ring that provides the x count that often decides the winners is pretty darned small at 25 yards unsupported, not to mention at 50 yards.

Which is maybe why I have (I think I still have) one of the Forster short bases, collets, and pilots gathering dust somewhere in one of the darker regions of my reloading bench. Now I'm going to start twitching, wondering if I've missed something.

As I pointed out, this is NOT about trimming 9x19. What you have after trimming -IS- 9x19, though.

As Spongebob says, "Imagination Station". Trying to assist those deprived of 9x19 brass. Like I was.

Ah! I didn't see anything in the original post or the thread title about making 9x19 out of something else by trimming. Maybe because I don't know this Spongebob guy, I missed the actual subject and intent being about something else.

To be more serious, maybe I should see if I can find the Forster bits 'n pieces I accumulated for trimming 9mm and offer them for sale if that would help somebody deprived of brass get reloading again.

Okay, got it. Responded to your PM message explaining the situation. As I said in that, one fortunate byproduct of competing in PPC is you never have to say sorry you don't have any 9mm cases

while I have no idea of what precisely is a-goin' on here?
I trim 9x19 down to 9x18, when I load 9mmMak for my SIL.
I use the Lee Case Gauge setup in a cordless drill...1mm is more than you'd think, when your trimming a case.
...btw, the brass needs to be expanded first...and you end up with hourglass shaped brass, until it's been fired once ;)

I did same thing originally for the 9 Mak, c. 1991. That same Forster short trimmer base came in handy for trimming down 9mm Win Mag to 30 Mauser soon thereafter. This was in Time Before Starline on our history revue. 30 Maumau and 7.62 x 25 (its Cyrillic cousin-in-law) will stretch upon firing, as does 30 Luger--esp. when you get sporty with velocities.

Me either. I was hoping for subtitles. How much needs to be trimmed off the parent case to make it a 9mm? I speak from experience, file trim dies are tedious, and not as precise as one might expect.

Remove enough extra length to get them to .750 or whatever your chamber requires.

I proved to myself that the crimp needs to be a taper, and NOT a roll crimp. Looks like the taper is expected, while a roll-crimp is TOO wide where it should be entering the taper in the chamber. I believe!
