Truck gun

Swapped out the X7 Marlin .308,1-4 Loophole for a little better long range boolit rifle today.

Older SS,long action Savage,30-06.Got a 50$ gunsho beater,old 3-9 Redfield.We went through the scope straightening out a few things.

Spends the day out on a construction job, always within arms reach.Dust, heat, toolbags knocking into it,not far from what happens in a pro guide camp?

Zero check this afternoon saw a cloverleaf 3 shot group @75 yes.Pics forthcoming.

Just wondering if any of ya'll got a favorite daily "truck gun",and what kind of acc are you getting?

I carry a 22 Henry lever more than anything else. It's the most compact and familiar gun I own. (Was my first gun) But I would rather have an old beat up 30-30 in carbine length for speed of handling with open sights as I shoot better and quicker with irons than a scope. Have not found the dirty-thirty for me yet. :(

I have a couple of truck beaters.
one is a mossburg 243 I done a little write-up on here when re-working the SIL's rifle [same rifle in 308 btw]
it's great for varmints and such and might even pull off a deer if needed.

the second one has to be about the ugliest rifle on the planet.
it's a chopped down Arisaka with a few inlays of some type of shiny shell and a relined barrel in 257 Roberts.
I think it was drug behind the truck on the way home from the gunsmiths shop to do the final stock finish.
the re-line and whatever reamer they used gives the Roberts chamber a weatherby type shoulder. [only with a single radius]
it wears a little 2x7 leupold and it has no business being anywhere near as accurate as it is.
I normally lob 87gr remingtons down the pipe at 2400 fps using I-4895.
the reduced load actually has low sd's and keeps the holes super tight together and it has shot some 200 yd groups that hang in the 1-1/2" area.
I also shoot some 100-120gr bullets in it on occasion.
if it ever got stole from the truck I'd sure miss that scope.

but for targets of opportunity around here they are about perfect.
I have been known to pull over on the way to dinner or [ahem] the MIL's funeral to take a minute to smack a rock chuck or yote if they present themselves.

1989,please (haha) reconsider that short brrl.I know it "makes sense" that it's quicker but....sometimes the swing motion of a leelte longer brrl makes those runnin, follow through's more,"hit" than miss.

Yeah,we're all in a hurry but,smooth is fast.I just gave away(one of my boys was in a yank) a 30-30 Marlin.The sole reason was a 336 has zero,"swing"....well least that I could tell.Good riddance.It's all good though,it works geographically.

I keep a bargain-parts AR-15 Dr. Frankenrifle in the trunk with loaded vest and ammo and an M&P .45 in the door pocket so I can fight my way to them. Ranch truck is an old beat-up Club Car and the "truck gun" is whatever I happen to take with me.

Fiver,I most definitely agree,a 2-7 is "THE"..MIL funeral rig.

Some things just speak for themselves, heaven knows my MIL was never short on criticism.

Further,a .25...make mine an 06,and a gussied up cheap as dirt factory stock also seems fitting.Just sayin.Make it a SS Weatherby...with a long brrl and I'm in.

AR's are cheating,but if it's a funeral,we ain't going to say anything.

Ian,let me loan you a custom stocked TC,.243,boolit machine and you'll forget all about that nonsense, haha.

Seriously, that was the other option to the 30-06 above. It needs a better scope though
Stupid TC's are miserable off any sort of formal rest, kinda like an AR...doh.But they are simple, dirt simple.

So true. But my trunk gun is right at home next to the other emergency equipment (first aid kit, lug wrench, jumper cables, etc.) and is a pretty respectable boolit machine in its own right. If I want to shoot from the bench I have a few nice blued steel and wood guns for that.

Ian,this probably should be deleted...one of my employs is a two timer serious as a heart attack army sn**er.It takes one shot.

Hmmm, I haven't seen a truck gun in SoCal for over 50 years.
Back in the late '70s when I had to have a rifle for work, the old Winchester '94 30-30 spent a lot more time in the scabbard hangin' on the side of the saddle than it ever spent in a rack in the truck.

My "truck gun"--if something else doesn't usurp that role for the day--is a Romanian Mosin-Nagant M-44. Full-power loads are a blasty prospect, almost to the Blackhawk-in-30 Carbine level--but the thing is pretty darn accurate to 200 yards, jacketed or cast. Elegant, it ain't--but carried Condition 4 behind the truck seat it gives a bit of comfort in bear and cougar country. Wolf--there are LOTS of truck rifles in Southern California, make no mistake. It's just kept on the down-low so that hoplophobes don't spaz out and dial 9-1-1.

I'm with Ian. Same basic trunk rig in my car. I figure if it gets to where things have gone
past what I can do comfortably with three 7 rd mags of .45 ACP, I really need a serious
problem solver available.

I can't seem to keep enough ammo on hand for my little lever gun's.
every time I have them in the truck I seem to just stop somewhere and run off 50-100 rounds.
