Velocity Limit with 50/50?

I was pretty happy with the performance of the bullet and alloy I'm using in my .30-30. I posted a pictorial on here. The bullet is the RD 165 _GC with a dimple point. The alloy is 75 % Coww 25% Mono and enough tin to get me to 2.5%, air cooled, to get close to the Sb according to the calculater. I'm pushing it to 1850 with Reloder 7. I'm a two hole guy, and like to eat up to the hole as the expression goes. I avoid shoulder shots like the plague. Blind man could have followed the blood trail, spray on both sides. I couldn't get the accuracy I wanted with a 50-50 alloy at 1850 in my .30-30 or the .30-06 I'm working on now. I'm not powder coating yet and have lots of tin, so I'm sticking with it until I find something better.

Sounds like my 24.5 grain load, Rally. My preferred load uses wd 50-50 (2.5Sb, .5Sn) and a compressed load of Reloder 7 and BPI Original granulated poly shotshell buffer to get 2150 fps from a 172-grain bullet/20" barrel...and does shoot straight thanks to just the right amount of PSB. Accuracy and velocith both peak out at the same time with that combo for some reason and it will shoot through a deer lengthwise regardless of how many bones it encounters including seven ribs and a femur.

My post on 30/30 powder, 185gr is a 1% sb AC BLL coated. 17gr rx7. QL could give fps, never chronyd it. Shot at pig car case, went throug gut with expansion, didn't go through shoulder. Appears to be accurate. Did some thing wrong with the 170pb, wouldn't chamber.

Ian,
I'm loading 24 grs Reloder 7 with the 165 Rd Gc, but my manual says 1850 Fps. I don't have a chronograph so don't really know my velocity. Have you run yours over a chronograph?

My "24.5 grain" load and my "preferred" load with buffer are not even close to the same, sorry I didn't make a very good distinction. I did chronograph a lot of the buffered work because I was just learning how to do it with different shapes of cases and was carefully scrutinizing data for spikes. There is a certain point in the workup where the velocity goes up and then levels off, accompanied by a noticeable reduction in report. That point happened to be an accuracy node in my 20" Marlin at about 2150 fps depending on brass and lube choice. I have been and still am reluctant to share it. 24.5 grains with no buffer is almost as good, just a lot slower and doesn't shoot groups quite so good that they get me called a liar.;) I don't recall chronographing the 24.5 grain load but your book data sounds about right. The 24.5 grain load was worked up long before trying buffer and I settled on what gave me the best groups at the time. It's still a great load even if not setting the house on fire with speed.

LOL. I wondered about the buffer. When I shot that deer I did the write up on here, my Dad was sitting on the other end of the slash. He said it sounded like a .22 mag to him. I'm tickled pink with my loading, but have no idea how fast it was running. Put 15 shots in a 2" dot shooting over the hood of my pick-up, at 50 yards, with my dog running back and forth across the seat at every shot. That qualifies as Red Neck accurate! Does a nice job on beaver too.
