A bit early but a big thank you to all of you who served.

Very proud to say both my father and father in law were career military men.

It is an honor to serve the United States and its citizens. Some spent two years of very hard duty; some spent three years of inconvenience. But all were willing to do what their friends and neighbors required of them. Very very few ever had the chance to distinguish themselves, not because they were not willing, but were never put in that situation. And those great many deserve the respect that is normally only given to the few.

Its a privilege to serve your country that about 10% take advantage of on average. We are the nation the world respects because of them. My grand uncle, Alfred Nickerson paid the ultimate price in the Argonne forest just over 100 years ago at 27 years old as a member of the lost battalion. My great grandmother never got over that. That never entered my mind when I enlisted but years later, it is something you think about.

In my family growing up, all of the men served in one service or the other. In my youth, I do not recall any man I knew that had not served. I was please to follow in their footsteps. Today, I am often surprised at the few that have served. I think the country is poorer for it.

Dad's dad was an Army doctor during WW I. His mom was an Army nurse. During WW II Dad trained paratroops at Fort Benning, Mom flew for CAP patrolling the Eastern Florida coastline.

We have what we have because of those who have unselfishly served. "Thanks" seems a long way from being sufficient.

A huge thank you from Me Also!

My Brother Frank did 3 tours of duty in Nam. 101 Airborne & A Green Bret. He arrived just after the Tet offensive. Most of his squad got wiped out shortly after his arrival. ( he told me he had a dream about it on the trip over there!) When his "Sneaky Pete" broke down: He Became an adviser to the South Veitnamese Army. Some wild stories he relayed to me!

It may, but I will tell you, that it is worth it's weight in Gold just to hear it. I served ('86-'97/never in harms way), Son #5 is an ABN Combat Medic currently in the 173rd ABN in Vicenza Italy. Neither of us expect anyone to say Thanks, but Man, when they do - will NEVER be able to explain what it means to us!

I am the slacker, never in the military. Father, brother, sister, uncle, two nephews were naval
aviators. One nephew-in-law is now active duty USMC aviator, my nephew was KIA in Afghanistan, a
Captain, aviator, former Harrier pilot on ground assignment. Another nephew-in-law is a
SpecOps AF JTAC, 8 deployments. The USMC aviator bombed ISIS summer of 2017. And
BIL was a USN radar operator on the Hawkeye, and P2Vs.

I really wanted to be a naval aviator, was nearsighted, easily fixed today, but only perfect vision permitted
for pilots back in my day. After getting a bachelor's and master's in engineering, I went to the Navy recruiter
to go for Naval Flight officer, figured to fly backseat on F14s, glasses OK there,.......was 6 months over their age
limit of 26. :headbang: Four years later they decided to accept up to age 30 for NFOs.....still six months
too old. Just was not meant to be for me.:embarrassed:

I honor all the service members in my family all the time, but I fly the flag on Veterans Day and
Memorial Day for all, especially my nephew, who I miss very much.

Like Ian said, Freedom isn't free.

LOVE that little poster RicInYakima. Yeah, for real. Many of them were friends of
mine, too. I remember my father as a young naval aviator, flying the might Phantom
in the 60s, going Mach 2 and over 100,000 ft in the baddest, coolest jet I had ever
seen. And I remember him as a very old man, needing help with many things.

Funny how our lives go, no one knows which path they will take.
We look back and see what could have been but at the time it was the correct thing to do!

At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
We'll have our Veterans Day Service today at our tiny towns WW2 and Revolutionary War memorial. a dozen or so people will show up. Someone will make a speech, we'll play taps and lay a wreath. Seems a very small tribute to those who gave so much.
