What Did You Shoot Today?

Shot 50-round each with the Randall and the 3" Lew Horton S&W Model 24-3 this morning. Lyman's 452374 with 5.0-grain of Unique, Lyman's 452460 with 6.0-grains of WSF, and Lyman's 429421 with 11.9 and 13.0-grains of 2400. Haven't shot the S&W in close to three years so it took some getting used to. And those grips are so comfortable. Brass is in the tumbler, and cleaning the guns is next. View attachment 24041

Cimarron is about 10 blocks from where I work, or rather "Texas Jack's" where they sell most of their stuff. My wife's grandparents old house and property is where the Cimarron offices and central warehouse is, also nearby. My dad hated the red stain on his 1860 so I made a new buttstock out of feathercrotch black walnut and checkered the wrist. I ain't that picky, liked them both.

At first, I thought the red stain was a bit much, but have grown to like it.

Shot for barely an hour in the cold wind. Had a good time with the 1932 38/44 Heavy Duty I have owned twice. Aftet I sold it the first time, the guy sent it to Arizona to be hard chromed. Then I bought it back ten years later for less than what I sold it for and kept it ever since. Shoots very well with heavy Keith bullets with 11 grains of 2400.

The Pedersoli/Navy Arms .45-70 rolling block Buffalo Rifle didn't like any of this morning's test loads. The test loads were an attempt to see if four powders that have never done any impressive work would. They didn't.

Guy on the bench to my left was shooting a 6.5 PRC, and its muzzle brake's muzzle blast was an attention getter. I had to wait till he shot before I could, otherwise my head would get rocked back and forth and I'd loose sight picture. He realized the problem and would wait till I'd fired a round. We ended up taking turns.

My son and I shot his CVA Hunter in 45-70 and a CVA Scout in 44 Mag. Trying to sight the 45-70 in but ran out of adjustment in the scope. Not sure if I should try to shim it or look for a different mount (or scope). These were cast 500gr and 330gr with IMR 4198. I shot it twice and holy cow, it kicked the crap out of me… I won’t be shooting those loads again unless I get a lead sled.

The 44 mag looks promising… 250gr cast load with 11gr of Unique and a 265gr soft nose Hornady were both shooting under an inch at 50 yds and Joseph shot a group at 100yd with the cast load with 3 shots inside an inch and a flyer that opened it up to 1.5. 200gr cast with 11gr of Unique were crap groups of about 2-3 inches at 50 yds. I told Joseph to burn ’em up.

No scope on the rolling block, just a Lyman 17A up front and a tang vernier in the back. I tried 340, 385 and
500-grainers, but the Lyman 405-grain 457193 is the keeper. I'm long past stout loads, so have come to rely on Unique and 2400 to provide loads that are all day shooters.

I'd be hard pressed to say which I enjoy shooting the most, the Garand or the rolling block.

I've posted this many times before, but in case you missed it.

Du Pont 5066.

Found an 8oz can of 5066 while unpacking, that I picked up at an old hardware store in MT 20yrs ago. Opened it, no dust, no rust, no funky smell. Dug out an old 60's vintage Speer manual, had data list for it. Loaded up 5rds with 4.5grs behind a 158gr SWC in a 38 Spl case and off to the range with the Ruger. Bang bang bang bang bang, everything went well, out and back home within 5 mins. Doubt I will ever see another can of 5066, so tomorrow I will gathering up odds and ends of various 38 cal projectiles and loading up plinking stuff.

I am sure some of it will be most accurate ammo I will ever load. In my world whenever a load works exceedingly well, one of the ingredients components is obsolete or gets discontinued.

DANG! THAT One could find a new home if you ever got tired of it! I have a pair of RBs in 43 Spanish, and a Swede action custom in 45-70. My TD load of a Lee 405 HB and 38.5 gr IMR-3031 is very mild and enjoyable (in both the Marlin 1895 and the RB - it has a long 1 1/16" bull bbl! the custom RB w/ tang is my profile pic). One of the 43s has a Tang, as does the custom gun. I love the RBs!

It's as much fun to shoot as I'll ever want to do with my clothes on.
