Army Seeking Retirees to Come back

I knew we were hurting, but...

Also have to admit this has been crossing my mind lately a lot. I retired in 2012 with 24 years in and zero disability.. I'm still in decent shape for a guy who's 58 and still think I can handle any of the stuff I did as a field grade (not getting back into living in tracked vehicles in the field for months doing young man stuff), still meet height weight requirements. Hmmm...

I kinda doubt DA would even consider entertaining it, but I might just look into it for shits and grins.

Yeah, part of it is both my sons serving now. Plus, I work with a bunch of kids in JROTC who are inclined to do it. Sounds funny, but I really feel like a POS slacker that I'm not serving now.

You're right, still kinda hard to have done it for years and still live in an Army town immersed in the culture and not really be a part of it anymore.

Usually when they call back old guys it's because they have some very high demand specialty. Doesn't really describe me.

They are hurting for people across the biard. The Navy is taking people with no diploma or GED, first fir that in like 30 years.

Okay, Rich, you "POS slacker" [your words], get your head screwed on straight, mister. You have any idea the influence you are having on those young folks in JROTC? Huh? I retired in '96 with 26 years. Occasionally I'll see or hear about one of the 'youngsters' I was so fortunate to mentor so many years ago - just like my mentors (some were WWII and/or Korea vets) even before that. There are others you will never hear about that will go on to great things also, military or not. There are more ways than one to serve.

Don't sell yourself short, my friend. But, it is nice to reminisce occasionally...

At the High School in our area JROTC was one of the best programs for the students. Definite standards for behavior and accomplishment, and very good and dedicated instructors. Very, very, worthwhile.

The Navy as always gotten their best sailors from the ranks of high school drop outs because we had no where to go but up. Also we thought boot camp and the boat were like going to Disney because it was such an improvement in our standard of living. :)

I did it all four years of high school, my oldest son did it all four years of high school and I've been teaching it for 12 years now. I'm pretty cnvinced it's one of the best things going for kids nowadays. I wish we had more schools with it around here, nowhere near the density that the southeast has.

Thank you all for your service.
I tried to join the Navy in 1985 and didn't make the cut then (at 20 yrs old). I am about the same age as you Rich...I couldn't even imagine the thoughts in your mind about joining back up.

Today’s Army is not the organization you retired from. The leaders have very different priorities. Ask Admiral Levine.
The last part is the odd health services thing, not part of "The Fighting Navy". BUT... I can remember folks that used their "protected class" quite well.

It used to be the Reserves or Guard were a good deal for the young 'uns, college and TRICARE Reserve Select... But you can't escape the correctness any more... Any of you old timers know of the "Blue Cards" for trainees?

The military is a game for the young.

An ex-girlfriend worked as a Civilian maintenance/mechanic for the Air Force (Reserves?) I think on a C-130 team? She made some big money, but her and I didn't last too long. She was retired Air force, She worked on some sort of fighter jets when she served in the 90s.
