First go with the 300 BLK

Ram silhouettes weigh 47#, and most go over with 160+gr cast loads at 1900fps+, 170gr at 1675fps+. Hard set rams, warped targets, etc will sometimes stand after being hit with a 200gr 30cal with 1900fps MV. 8" x 3/8" gongs at 100 yards get slammed pretty hard. The same shot with 5.56 move a little but generally have deep craters. I do most of my load development locally at 50 or 100 yards but like to test at 300m and beyond when I have the opportunity.

Yeah, for the price of what it would take to put a 9mm top end together, I would rather just buy more 300BLK brass and optics.

New Federal 300 BLK brass is excellent so far. At 6/$1 I can't even justify the time making it. I've already bought as much as I can afford for now, might pick up another 1K rounds later on (assuming it's available). I figure 8-10 reloadings for the subs. I too need better optics, and also better furniture and some angled BUIS, but I wanted to see how well this rifle would work out for me before jumping into all that expense. Oh, and a suppressor next year....

Even MORE Dark Side kind of fun with a Mystic and Slide Fire........

OK, I've cleaned up the lathe and getting ready to start turning titanium again. I just need to do something better for the internal threading.

Have you had a chance to play with the captured recoil system?

We crossed electrons, I was sending you a PM just now, about that and other things...

http://gcgbrass.myshopify.com/ reformed FC 13 brass $90/K + shipping

I have optics only at this point, but shot Bob's 5.56 with irons yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised at how well I did at 385m and made me think about a set.

My lighter weight 300 has a Weaver Kaspa 1.5-6x Zombie (30mm tube)scope mounted. I recall about 140 minutes of elevation, and the settings seem repeatable. At $130 shipped (ebay) it appears to be a bargain. The other version of the 1.5-6x has a different reticle, is illuminated red instead of green, and I recall seeing them for $180. I may opt for one of those and leave the red dot on the pistol, which could become SBR if I choose to do the paperwork and send $200.

It IS a real deal if the reports are accurate. I'll know in a week or so. I want to see if he truly holds +/- .002" on the length. Some of the other guys are +/- .005" and twice the price.

Can't beat that. I wonder how the necks will do for thickness and state of anneal.

My 10.5" pistol barrel has the tightest chamber and throat of my barrels. Lee 155s over 15gr IMR4227 and crimped in the crimp groove worked flawlessly despite the bullet in the neck at least .001" larger than the throat. Groups looked pretty good on pig silhouettes at 300m, so I tried the same ammo in both of my 8" twist rifle barrels. I will recommend this as a baseline load for anyone starting with Lee 155s.

I just use my basic 96-2-2 water dropped recovered range lead. Its easy, seems to work in everything, and I have buckets of it.

Yep, ought to work in everything, that's about what I use but less tin. My M.O. is water drop for most stuff that needs a gas check, air cool for most everything that doesn't (except .44 Magnum).

I made up some dummy rounds this morning and checked in both my pistol and tighter carbine chambers. The RCBS 30-165-SIL chambers just fine, but the ogive never touches rifling. NOE 311-155-FN chambers in the carbine but not the pistol due to the fat ogive. NOE clone of the Saeco #315 works in both. NOE 309-169 Elco works in the carbine but not pistol. Lee group buy clone 311041 crimped behind the top driving band (behind the crimp groove) would work in the carbine, but puts the GC a little deeper than I would like. I was expecting the ramps to be rough on the noses and ogives, but it didn't seem to be the case, so I'll have to load some and put them on paper. My expectation is that the RCBS will be the least accurate due to perceived undersize ogive and short driving band length.

Sounds about like trying to fit my fleet of .308s or .30-30s with one bullet: The only thing they have in common is the caliber stamped on the barrel. Unless you try to push them hard, those RCBS bullets might just shoot great regardless of floating the noses. Ya never knows till ya tries.

The 300BLK is something that puts emphasis on alloy selection and temper since our options for powder and bullet shape/weight are very limited compared to a lot of other things, at least if we're considering the AR platform. We know what powders will work, what loads will work, and what our fit parameters are, so if the bullet design isn't working out within that box we can adjust alloy quite a bit to make it come together. Probably all that needs adjusting is the degree of heat treatment.

the 165 silh boolit has shot well in my 7 twist rifles pushed by 9.5 grs of AA#-9.
I use my 4/6 alloy which bumps the diameter a smidge so I get engraving on the nose, this alloy has proven to shoot much better with this bullet in the 308's too.

I thought those black-tips were their 110gr varmageddons for a second[I was reaching for the debit card]
the 110gr varmagedons are accurate enough to make the wife look good busting golf balls [out to 100 yds] on top of 17.5 grs of AA-4100

The black tips are the bullets that guys want for shooting deer and hogs with the 300BO.

I had shot the RCBS 30-165 in my 300 carbines and 308s, but don't recall them ever producing the best groups. You might be right, air cooled might work better in the 300s.

I see they are a mono-metal and are on clearance too.

the 300 is still a little mystery to me, it likes what it likes and really dis likes what it doesn't.
my AAC and the wifes ruger are different enough to have dis-similar tastes too.
they will both shoot the 165 silh [thankfully, since she can cast them herself]
mine will shoot the LEE 230gr, but the jury is still out on hers doing so accurately.
hers will shoot the little 115gr 30 carbine boolit like a champ and I have to fight to get them chambered in mine.
