Road trip from Fairbanks Alaska to Arkansas

I made 2-3 trips a year from Reno to Mena AR 95 to 40 sometimes 93 to 10 via Gonzalez Tx but more often just straight across 40 to Salisaw Ok down 59/259 . Never got stopped except in the Immigration check just out of El Paso then it was just a pause and go with 3 white guys in a blackout Excursion 9 guns 500 rounds .

This is looking like an epic road trip. Does make a feller want to be real aware of all that can go bananas even before starting the engine and pointing the nose in the right direction.
LOL
Keep I mind I’m an Alaskan. I believe an Alaskan coined “FUBAR”, not sure, but it sure applies.
Living the life I do, things going south are SOP. The certainty doesn’t mean a guy has things under control. Especially when you add in counting on others. Well, then there’s the brain farts a guy can have.
Anyway you are correct.

Glaciers - ever watch the TV show RoadKill? Duck tape and ratchet strap hot rods. Of course THEY have camera crew and chase car. Good Luck.

"From Dusk 'till Dawn" is the definition of a road trip gone wrong.

"Fandango" is another good one.

Well I was hoping for an early start, but…
Well got up fairly early as Walmart opens at 6. Yeah, camped out in the peaceful Walmart parking lot. Anyway, the door was locked. Apparently they were redoing the floor at that entrance. They have a Mc D’s at that entrance so it was closed. No coffee. Back out to the trailer. We certainly aren’t set up yet, my concern has been with getting the truck and trailer ready for the road. So still mostly in boxes and duffels. I don’t mind except I’d like a clean shirt. Got everything else. Found the coffee pot

Moved my 60# tool bag and two cases of water and a couple other small heavy items to the rear of the trailer as I thought there was too much hitch weight. Wrong. Started out and it was doing the slight shimmy’s of incorrectly weighted unit. Pulled over and put the water and the tool bag back in the bed of the truck. Much better. Pulled great.
Made it Monticello southeastern Utah. Nice RV park on the road shortly, 7AM.
Tundra did great. Turned 100,000 miles in route yesterday afternoon.

Cruising at average of 60 miles per hour. 4000 miles so far and used just under one quarter of a quart of oil. But, I was hoping for 10 miles per gallon towing this trailer. We have averaged 11.7 miles per gallon. That includes relatively mountainous country. This is a very good 22 year old truck.
I will be posting a lot of pictures when I can, probably when I reach Mountain Home.

Absolutely stunning country.

ALWAYS load a bumper hitch trailer 60% weight forward of the axles and 40% rear of the axle. Load it wrong and going downhill will be quite exciting, could even be the end of the trailer, the truck and you. If the fish tailing starts the breaks are your enemy. Glad you figured it out.

What day do you figure on getting here?

I tried Mac's Steak House coffee once, haven't made that mistake again since.

I'll try to stop by the park late Saturday morning, let ya sleep in.

What are your plans (other than sleeping) for the first few days here?

No plans. Hangout, relaxing, hopping to meet you guys. I’m not a late sleeper. Karyn is, but showers are certainly in order. Karyn sleeps in.

You gonna do any Casting on the Trip? Maybe over a campfire with some old Ideal Tools!

Bruce
Yeah that’s probably not going to happen. Over a campfire sounds like work. I also have enough trouble casting with good equipment and a PID controlled pot.
Just not that much of a nostalgic buff.

BTW John, might pique your interest that there is a gun show here in town Saturday and Sunday. :)
No that would be a good start on a weekend. Truth be told, Sunday sounds more possible.
We have a lot of things to sort out on this trailer as well.

Well if you have been reading along I said the a good plan goes to crap with the first shot.
Well things started great, fairly early start, two travel cups and a thermos full of hot coffee and off we went. Planning on making Amarillo by tonight.
Well Karyn summed it up pretty well in a text to my kids and other assorted relatives, so I’ll just copy and paste her writing.
I’m not going to live this one down.

Thursdays morning adventure! Had a great night sleep plugged in at a really nice, yet inexpensive, RV Park south of Moab in Monticello. John raved about how great the bathrooms were, clean, nice, so this morning he did his business, shaved, we vowed to come again.

Got going with coffee in hand, and just as we were almost pulling out into the highway, he decided to visit the head one more time. Biscuit and I stayed in the truck, John came out and away we went. Basically, 8:10.

Beautiful countrysides, we decided to gas up in Cortez 60 miles away. So, we pull into a Chevron and he goes for his wallet that’s in his shirt pocket… which he does not have on anymore… Karyn where’s my shirt? Look on the backseat, Biscuit where’s my shirt? She shrugs. Must be in the trailer. Of course. Nope! He left it hanging on a hook in bathroom stall #3 in Monticello!

We called. There was a person showering in #3. She said she’d sit outside and call us back. We started heading that way. We had no idea our plan to come back sometime would be so soon. Credit cards, money, driver’s license… nightmare of difficulty looming. She called, she had it, we got there, thanked her profusely, and we headed back to Cortez where we regassed up. 3 hours later, so much for the early start. It cost us about 4 hours actually

We’re about an hour out of Albuquerque. Trucking’ on. Still planning on Amarillo Texas tonight. Gosh! This country!

We’re at McD’s. Gonna push on a bit. I’ve got something to tease him about for the rest of our lives. He’s never done anything like that before. So unlike Pop.
