I've been looking at this Ruger SP - 101 for about the past 2 months.
The LGS had this same revolver in .22 LR, .32 H & R Mag., and 357 Mag. So I could have purchased any of the 3 today.

I have spent the last few days thinking about this revolver ( you ever done that ? ? ):rolleyes:

Today, with all the brass, ( 38 Spec. and 357 Mag. ) that I have on hand ( tons ) and the bazillion 38/357 bullet moulds that I have, I made a decision in favor of the 357 Mag.

What is your opinion ?

Please don't ask " Why did you need that ? "
My wife has already asked that question ............................

I like it! I've almost bought one in 32 but like you I've got so much 38 brass on hand and there isn't any size or weight advantage going with the smaller caliber. Already have k frame S&W. Which LGS?

Ben, if you're happy, I'm happy for you! I bought my second 357 a couple of weeks ago, S&W model 60-10, 3 inch adjustable sights. Why? I have a 6 inch Colt "357" that shoots better than I can hold even over sandbags. There are so many S&W and Colt 38 Specials in the house, I can't remember them all. But I like shooting 357 WC loads in it! Enjoy your new toy! Best wishes, Ric

Ric,

I have a pair of 686 Smiths, a 2 3/4 inch , a 6", A Blue Ruger GP 100, 357 Mag., A Smith Model 19, 4", A Colt Officers Model Match, many 2" snubs in 38/357 Mag.

I still wonder why my wife would ask such a question ? ?

LOL! My wife is in her quilting room, stacked floor to ceiling with fabric squares. She really doesn't care what I bring home as long as it will fit into my computer room. After 49 years of marriage, she is just happy I'm still around, and the same for me. We very seldom lose money on guns, but you can't say the same for stocks and 401k's.

Ben,
I have an SP101 chambered in .32 H&R Mag. Mine, however, has a rear sight that is only adjustable for windage. Yours has a much better set of sights. The only other complaint I have is the small grip. I have large hands and even with a set of grips that cover the backstrap it's still a bit small. Other than those minor complaints, no problem.

I still like the SP101. It's a GOOD piece of gear.

How different is an SP101 from a GP100?
I really like my GP. Like really, really like it.

Hogue grips fit well and or of excellent quality.

However I find them too narrow when used on my SW 29 , SW 686 and Ruger SBH 44.

I've ordered a set of Hogue grips.

This pic should give you an idea of what my SP 101 will look like with my new grips.

Brad,

Think of an SP 101 as a J Frame Smith & Wesson
that is beefed up and on a big dose of steroids.

The engineering and basic construction of the two guns is very similar.
They are dissimilar in size , heft, and weight.
Of course, the GP -100 is a 6 shot, and the SP 101 , a 5 shot.

Ahhhhhhh
SP 101 is the carry size version of the GP100. Well, with one less round.

I like it.

I could not have summarized it better !

If you want a carry / hide out type GP 100, it would be the SP 101.
It is a type of trail gun, light weight carry type revolver.

Please keep us in the loop how it shoots.
I have been eyeing a new Smith 686, Ruger GP100 Match Champion, and that very gun you just bought.
They are all sitting side by side in the local gun shop and have not been able to decide!
I have an N frame smith, Security six, custom shop smith 642 and a cheapo rossi smith copy.
They all shoot verry well even the rossi I just have a wheel gun itch in the 38/357 range that I just like to keep scratching :):):)
