K-Hornet alluded to my only objection to the 17 HMR--wind sensitivity. That is a huge issue in the deserts where I do most of my hunting, the winds stop blowing for about 15-20 minutes each month, usually after dark. Yeah, it's an exaggeration--but a slight one.
On the positive side of the caliber's ledger, it and the 22 WMR remained readily available in Ridgecrest during the entire time that 22 LR was unobtainium. Neither caliber is what you could call "cheap", but there are times I want to whack rats and NOT want to chase down brass for refilling. If I was truly a lazy varmint hunter, I could do about half of my rat and song dog strafing with a rimfire.
The 17 HMR is quite effective on little critters and coyotes to about 150 yards. I didn't try many shots past that distance, owing to wind. Having 22 Hornets, 223 Rems, and 22-250s along at the same time on rat hunts spoils you rotten. A couple I know north of Bishop LOVE the 17 HMR for rockchuck shooting in the White Mountains. They call my 22-250s "Al's Howitzers". Being non-reloaders, they are somewhat unenlightened, but still are nice people. Her elk chile colorado must be tasted to be believed.
