.22 Hornet problem

Jon,

I used it for both...... Although jacketed loads were used for the most part. I make a hollow point version of the 37gr NOE that I hunt ground squirrels with (if this winter ever ends!) While Lil'Gun is accurate; Alliant 410 is even more so. Speed is less at 2850fps but you'd never know it on impact. My buddies call it the "cast V-Max"!

I find my .32-20 wolf loads (which I have along while hunting Blue Grouse) also shoot very accurate at full power with Lil'Gun. Again.... this with a gascheck.... I haven't had the best accuracy with Lil'Gun and plain base cast...... or reduced loads for that matter for what it's worth.

Pete,
Thanks, that answers a couple questions in my mind.

Dick.....

You might try 1680 as 9.3 mentioned with the 55gr. I remember it (1680) grouped in my 12" twist Hornet the best with heavy cast bullets; just not best overall.

I have an old Rem 700 in .222 Mag. It will shoot Lyman 225462 almost in the same hole! This is a 1 in 14" twist???? Hornets can be a primadonna at times! They just like the lighter cast bullets for me.. because they just do I guess!

Range day! and I've pretty definitively established that this Topper (1/12" twist) doesn't like 55 grain cast. I tried four different Red Dot and IMR 4227 loads with groups not under 1 1/2" at 50 yards.

BUT, with 45g hornady 'Bee' hollow points, it shot groups under 3/8" at 50 with 9 grains of Lil' Gun. The makings of a nice camping/walking-around carbine.

I shoot my CZ triple deuce (1/14" twist) with the 55 grain. Lee bullets and did respectibly--under 3/4" at 50.
