Careful with the brass. Look at it cross eyed and the case is destroyed, that stuff is fragile. I ruin most by hitting the bottom of the sizer with the case mouth.
Yes, I owned a Win. Model 43 in the late 60's. You're exactly right, if the case isn't fully in position in the shell holder or is " tipped " ever so slightly from the true vertical position ,with a sloppy fit shell holder, you'll get exactly what you've described.

That was one reason I ended up getting rid of my 22 hornet. It was a Ruger #3. The other reason is I never could get it to shoot worth a dang. I had too many other accurate rifles to play with.
My #3 was not as near accurate as I wanted when I had it K'd. That took care of the accuracy big time. Saw a #3 at a Lincoln gunshow not long ago, with a very decent bbl, and a price tag of $1,100. (Firm)
Ben I was hoping you would get it by the weekend.
What ever you do don't lose the little "top hat" bushing for the forearm. Those things are hard to come by.
I look forward to your results.
Jeff
$1100/firm for a #3 x 22 Hornet?? Hijo la! Mine shoots acceptably well for a 200 yard rat gun, jacketed or cast. Too many sellers are clearly under the influence of $100/brick-22-LR-itis. This sort of predatory ^%&$ is driving me out of this hobby field, and sure as h--l disincentivizes ANY sort of information-sharing. Total turn-off for me. I prefer shooting predators to feeding them.
Well Ben how is the K-Hornet coming along??
My understanding is all you need to do to form your brass is to shoot 22Hornet in a K-Hornet camber? Is this correct? I'm having trouble remembering these things??
Ben, if you want to clear the range try this load. A case full of 1680 under a 35 Vmax. I have no idea how fast it is but the muzzle blast is impressive. Even more impressive is the ball of fire at the muzzle. I really need to try that load at night sometime to really appreciate it.
think of the K as an ackleyed hornet round. [K was for kay-chuck though as I remember]
the shoulder is pushed forward and squared up as well as the case body is made cylindrical.
it really adds some good case capacity to the little round.
The fireball comment got me laughing. A snubby .357 with a stout load of Blue Dot or a short .45 ACP loaded up with Power Pistol will put on quite a show near dusk.
So a basic fire forming cases is the way to go? I've just picked a new encore barrel in22 hornet then a 22K-Hornet barrel came in a three barrel package deal for the contender,so I now have both.
