3 shot groups vs 5 shot groups vs 10 shot groups

When I work up loads I shoot 3 shot groups but load 5 as to be able to fire 2 more for validation of a particular combination.
I've shot many 5 shot groups for proficiency and saved many of those targets . They weren't saved because they were especially stellar groups ,but rather to serve as collected data . In the case of 1 rifle a summer worth of load development resulted in 20 "best" 5 shot groups on targets. Some overlapped but most had a different, sometimes very different point of impact. I transferred all of those targets to a single centered bull. What I learned from that is the rifle in my hands was capable of a broad range of bullets a couple of powders and a very narrow velocity window for each bullet . I learned that the rifle was very touchy about case capacity. And I learned why it simply wouldn't shoot factory ammo . The shotgun groups of factory ammo that summer became a very solid 2" 100 shot group and definitely not what I expected from that rifle . It is also probably unrealistic to expect it to be on 1 target with a single load from a single shooting session as it was done over 3 months with 20 loads .

I find that unless I need to prove something that a 10 shot groups are tedious, by the same token the compiled target of 100 would be a daunting task to shoot every every round into that group over 100 days @ 3:11 every afternoon. In the end it would show the stability of the rifle, load and shooter but how many of us have a load that shoots to the exact point on a 40* 60% rain any second day and a 95* 17% hasn't rained in a month day ? Oh wait in my locale that's only a week .... :) .
I think the idea of the working class rifle shooting a 2 week 10 shot group is just bizarre to me . While it has the merits of knowing what the cold shot will do by the time you have a load or loads for it you should have a pretty good idea what to expect.
Can you imagine Camp Perry being shot at 1 or 2 shots per day by each shooter over 2-3 weeks ?
Somehow the 1 shot per day 10 shot has no context beyond establishing a base line of load and rifle stability.
