311407 in the 30-30 Win.

For the past 6 years I've had nothing but headaches with
my many different .30 cal. cast bullet styles trying to use them in my Ruger #1, 30-30 Win. Many of my bore rider 30 cal. cast bullets wouldn't even begin to chamber in this rifle.

98% of my cast bullet styles in .30 cal. won't chamber because of an almost non existent throat. Cast bullets had to be seated ridiculously deep to allow chambering. I just hated that.

It is a new day now. The 6 cav. 311407 mould that I got yesterday has a smaller dia. nose and a smaller dia. for the 1st two drive bands.

If I didn't know better , I'd think this mould was made specifically for my rifle. An instant success in this particular rifle. In the pics attached, notice that the nose of the bullet is lightly engraving into the rifling. Minimal jump will often offer some good groups.

Can't wait to get to the range with this combination.

Spent the afternoon castling #308403, ideal’ Pope bullet. Like you these are going into custom 30/30 Sharps SS sized .3105”.

it works good in the 30-30 bolt guns too.
bout that much sticking out too.

not so much in the lever operated versions unless you like really short cartridge lengths... i got other molds for those anyway.

Never tried this one. Haven't had difficulties with cast in 30/30 since trading off that one T/C carbine bbl that would not shoot any cast for me. ( shot jacketed well not awesomely)

I just scoped a favorite old Marlin 336 sc. i would like ta test with a few cast. But too late for this year. Ill load for spring.

The only thing that would make that rifle prettier is if it were in MY safe instead of YOURS!;)

That's a lovely bullet as well.

The Speer #14 manual mentions short-throated 30/30s being made withing the "past decade," which is ore than a decade ago now.

I wonder WHY.

I already have my ONE "heavy" (the other is 118 grains) 30/30 bullet, but if I did not, THAT one would do just fine.

@Ben My rifle could be the twin of yours. A very nice rifle. It has exactly the same non-throat. I have tried a number of molds for it. Middling results so far. The 311407 looks promising. Looks like the neck is turned on the cartridge shown? I have loaded bullets up to .313 without too much problem, my chamber will take .332 neck dia. if the flare is removed with a very light crimp.

I look forward to learning of your results at the range!

Years ago I bought a box of 311466. ~150 GC. No idea what the alloy or lube are. Similar to the '407 but without the reduced diameter section. The nose tapers quickly so it might chamber ok at full length. I haven't tried them in anything, but I will now.

or simply to switching over to the RCBS 165gr. silhouette bullet.
it's solved a whole bunch of non throat havin rifle issues for me over the years.
all you got there is a long nose rider and some bore plugger in the case neck.

depends on the alloy etc.
mine makes a scosh over 300 in ww with tin.
but gets some tighter with 4/6 alloy.
i use the 4/6 ones waay more and they seem to shoot better in my Ruger 308 [god i've shot a LOT of them in that little Ruger] and the 30-40 model 95, but are pretty tight in the 7.5X55 so i go to the ww alloy for an easier engraving of the nose.
