7x57 load testing

Awhile back Mrs.Thumbcocker went with me to the local gun shop. She spied a Ruger #1 RSI in 7x57. She pointed it out to me knowing that #1 Rugers make me weak in the knees. While I was dithering, she asked to look at it. She shouldered it and said "I want this" to the clerk. I congratulated her on her hard nosed negotiating. The rifle had a positively horrible trigger, the worst I had ever seen on a #1 and the recoil pad was a brick. A replacement sear got the trigger down to 2.5 pounds and a deceleration pad took the meaness out of the recoil. Load testing started with the RCBS 145 Sillouett bullet. Research showed others had good luck with IMR 3031so i started there. Here are the results. 20240112_090836.jpg20240112_090945.jpg20240112_090921.jpg

When asked long ago “What is the best cartridge for deer hunting?”- P.O. Ackley answered the 7mm Mauser.
I’m working on one now because I need to give it some attention after years of .308, 25-06, and 8mm.(all of which kill deer just fine).

that same amount of 4895 works good too... just in case you got too much of it kicking around you don't know what to do with.

Beautiful rifle. I love Ruger #1's, I have several #1B's and #1V's.

You might find better grouping when shooting a two-piece stock from supporting your shoulder with the rear bag under your armpit rather than the butt stock. This works for me about one in three tries with both single shot and lever actions.

The 7 x 57 is classic and one of my all time favorite cartridges .
And the Ruger #1 may be one of the best rifles for that cartridge.

Well Done on all levels

That is a fine rifle for your wife.
Ruger #1 rifles are one of those classic rifles that will be used for many years.

That RCBS 145 grain bullet shot real well at 100 yards under 10 grains of Green Dot. I switched to that "soup can" special run mold Midsouth was selling for a while, about a 135 grain flat nose mainly because of the six cavity feature. I shot that one over that same charge until I ran out of Green Dot, then switched to 700X with similar results.

I was gifted a 287308 mold which had been hollow poined, I found data for a bullet that weight in the old RCBS cast manual, seems it was 3031 at about 1900 FPS. Killed a white tail doe quite well for me, but I really need togo back and work more on an accurate cast bullet deer load for that rifle.

Somewhere in my stuff, I have a 7mm mold which is about a 135 grain plain based mold. Probably be real good with a load like that.

if you powder coat, try it without.
heck give a hand full a go without, i've seen that work in the 7-08 pretty good.
