Josh,
I agree with Jim regarding the Lee 8mm Karabiner bullet. I've read on other sites, that the Karabiner and Maximum were designed to breathe new life into military rifles with shot out throats. The huge melplate would make the Karabiner an awesome deer slayer, but that bullet needs to be seated way down the neck (about 2.772") in order to get the cartridge to chamber. Even then, there's not a guaranteed cycle function every time. Also, when the Karabiner is seated to chamber from the magazine, the bullet nose isn't close to the rifling, so there's a jump to the rifling during ignition.
The other option is to seat the bullet so that the nose touches the lands, say 2.836". However, then the cartridge leaves the magazine and the melplate smacks the end of the barrel instead of chambering. Presumably, for a shot out throat, one would be limited to a single shot loading.
The Mauser 98 rifle was designed for a pointy bullet to help track the cartridge into the chamber, (or a round nose at the minimum). The original Lyman/Ideal 323471, is the mold to cherish. If you already own that own, then your ahead of the game, IMHO.
