A rifle for my grandson.

I thought it was my job to teach all my kids and grandchildren and every kid that had any interest at all . Women are fickle at best but I have introduced a few that had an interest. I don't know if they pursued it or not after they left the range but I would hope that the enthusiasm lasted . Ins girls.jpg

Ben,
Yes, a lot of work, but I did enjoy it. You can probably buy another plastic stock for
that gun to cut down pretty reasonably.

It was an honor to teach these two boys, and their sister (although her interest is FAR less) to shoot,
along with my own grand nephew.

Currently helping one of the boys get ready for USMC rifle basic training and the other with USN pistol and shotgun basic
training. They both decided to go military in the last few weeks.

Thanks. Both will make it fine, based on their basic skills. But they both want to
qualify Expert, so we will see if they can polish up their skills before they show up.
I am careful to emphasize that if I tell them to do something one way and their
military instructors tell them a different way...... be darned sure to do what the
military instructor says. :)

Ben is starting his grandson out correctly. He will likely wind up being an
expert shooter. Starting them young and teaching them to be safe is a great
deal of fun to do, or at least it has been for me. I expect Ben will be grinning
from ear to ear for years to come on this "project".

Trevor had an opportunity to hold his new rifle yesterday.
He was thrilled to see and hold his new rifle.
We took about 10 minutes to discuss how the butt stock fits on his shoulder and where his face would be on the stock.

He looked down the sights and said he could see the rear peep sight and the front sight both clearly.

He is anxious to get out and shoot the rifle
( as any of us would have been at his age ).

We still have a lot of discussion on range / firearms
safety before we load this rifle ! !

On 0-100, we're at about a 10 right now.
Rome wan't built in a day................

HE WILL BE a safe shooter if I have anything to say about it.

Ben ...just remember a day can be like a hundred years when you are that age...
No doubt.
My daughter had a short attention span when I started her shooting. After 30 min or so she was done.
Took her hunting and my dad kept tell me she would get anything sitting in the cabin. I reminded him that she could spend half the day in the cabin and half hunting or spend the entire day at home. I catered to HER needs, not my desires.

I bet Ben and Trevor have quite a few good days ahead of them at the range. Somehow I think Ben will do what is best for Trevor.

Keep it fun. Paper targets aren't fun for kids. Clay targets are good. Did I mention keep it fun at his level?

I developed a level of trust with my daughter. She wouldn't hunt with anyone else. If I hand her a gun and tell her she can handle it she trusts me. Seeing that she shot my SRH with full loads at 15 and a CZ 550 in 375 H&H with full loads at 19 I would say she did well. It is all about trust and them knowing you won't do anything to hurt them.

Nothing pisses me off more than the jerks who give people hard recoiling guns just to see them flinch or get hurt. Idiocy. No better way to scare people off than that.

AMEN ! ! !

A great way to be certain that the kid will NEVER BE a shooter !

I'm going to nose around and see if I can come up with a few boxes of " CB's " for Trevor's little break open .22

You need a 32-20 barrel for that rifle. A 120 gr plain base and 3 gr Trailboss shoots well in my Marlin 1894 at around 750 fps. Very quiet.
You get the pleasure of casting and loading the ammo too.

The UTube videos that show women being knocked back, down, whatever are prime examples of what
irritates Brad------and me! The yo yo's who stick a hard recoiling weapon in the hands of an unsuspecting
individual (woman or kid) may often turn the novice into an anti-gunner. Not what we need in this time
of anti gun mania.

Target wise for kids, agree clays are good, as are balloons. Balloons in an open field loose on the
ground make great shotgun targets for kids if there is a gentle breeze. As a kid, we used to shoot
BB guns at Necco waifers at about 15' that were set up in a slotted boards. Of course the old favorite
tin cans work great, and even better when they are suspended on a string for the swinging action.
If kids can see motion, action, or breaking they will stay interested.

CBs are great to start a new shooter. No need for hearing protection, makes communication
a lot easier.

Does the stock fit him or will you need to cut it down?

My boys were 10 and 11 when I took them to the range the first time. Had 22 pistols and rifles with us. They enjoyed, but said they thought there would be more recoil. Next time, along with 22s I took a model 65 218 bee, a '92 44-40 and the 1911. They enjoyed more and said don't ever leave the 1911 at home and do any of the other rifles have more recoil? Next time I brought the '03 Springfield and another 30-06 with about a hundred rounds of 16 grns of 2400 under 311413s. Older son fell in love the '03. Younger son was still looking for his favorite. Both have shot the model '71 Winchester and enjoyed, but the older one still favors the '03 over all others and the younger one favors the model '76 45-60.

Both have been taught that firing as fast as you can pull the trigger is for those who have an I.Q. that matches their belt size. And, if you were to have a squib you might not catch it before pulling the trigger again. Both have a thoughtful and methodical approach to shooting and outshoot me with the 1911. Rotten kids!

Neither have loaded cast bullets yet, but both have loaded jacketed 30-06 and 45 ACP.

Sounds to me like you did a top flight job of introducing them to shooting.

Good job,

I ordered a Thompson Center 4 X scope specifically designed for this rifle.
It came with the base and rings.
Pretty nice scope. Good eye relief. Clear optics.
