One of my favorite bullets for white tail deer .
I shoot 22 grs. of 2400 with this bullet in my 98 Mauser, 45/70 Siamese Sporter Carbine.
Deadly accurate and a real killer.
It always hits with a lot of authority.
The 45/70 is 146 yrs. old.
However, for me, it works just as well ( or better ) than
it did 146 yrs. ago for the US Army.
I had a Sia Mauser in 45/70, a Navy arms conversion I think. Never should have sold it. Wonderful rifle. I have a #1 SMLE conversion now, it's just not as nice or as accurate.
Mine is a very similar design but from a long past Lee GB. Feed great in my Marlin and has accounted for a couple black bears. Mine is a solid plain base.
24 gr of 2400 is my preferred load with my bullet For general use. For bears I used a reasonably healthy charge of H322 to get 1650 FPS.
I must be a real sissy. 42 grains of 3031 and a little tuft of Dacron under a 535 Postell in my 13.5 lb 45/90 just about brings tears to my eye after just a few rounds.
I have been shooting this bullet In the link below with 24gr of 2400 but want something with a bit more width in the nose.
This load is super accurate but for hunting my thinking is the larger meplate will help.
Well, that makes me feel a little better. The steel crescent butt plate and shooting from a bench sure doesn't help tame recoil. I'm thinking 2400 is the powder to use for the 45/70. Or 300-grain bullets and a whiff of Unique.
