Announcing the death of Herman Survivors

I was looking for a decent boot for dove season, has to have good treads and be waterproof. That way I can climb the hill in wet grass, set up, and be fairly comfortable sitting there for a few hours.

Anyways, surfing the web, I saw Herman Survivors for under $30 at Wally World. Antennas up, I started to czech it out. Of course, Wally World is sorta sparse on reviews, so I fell back to Google, looking for reviews. I found em.

Turns out Wally World bought the name... And little else, so it seems. Of course, we don't know how many in total have been sold, so perhaps there are a lot of red chinese lovin' satisfied customers out there...

What I detect with my superior logic (well, read the reviews) is Wally World has (had, at least) a 90 day return policy, and at least one customer had a pair falling apart, and the store wanted unworn footware before issuing a refund.

Not sure I want to shoot the dice and gamble I get the pair made under the direct supervision of a Wally World rep, instead of the normal level of concern.

And now back to the regularily scheduled program...

PS. The good reviews are almost always for the pre-red chinese made boots. The 1970s era boots are almost worshipped...

Even Red Wings are made almost exclusively " offshore" now . That makes me very sad . It's like everything else in my life , I finally got to the place where I could actually afford the cream without setting it up as a quarter ,6 month or annual splerge and bam the best of the best is barely above average mediocrity.

Used to wear Red Wing "Wellingtons" when I wore a uniform (late '70s-early '80s). They were very good boots. Like most things these days they're probably now made to sell, not to last.

Danner boots have a pretty good rep. Don't know about today, but as of 3 or 4 years ago they were still being made in Portland, OR.

I wear the higher end KEEN boots most of the time. Good cushioning, support and wide just about all the way to the toe.

I like W C Russell Moccasin Co boots. All of mine are custom fitted while wearing the same socks I wear with the boots. I bought my first pair about 15 years ago and I'll likely never wear them out. I estimate I've walked over 2,000 miles in them and I've replaced the laces once.

I have a pair of Red Wing steel toed Irish Setters which have been pretty durable. The only issue I
have is that the tongue is cordura nylon pack fabric, not leather. Otherwise, seem to be well made
and "old school".

NOT any sort of hunting boot though, heavy with steel toe, I use them for mowing and
any time working with heavy stuff that might crunch my feet.
