Barrel throating

My 1911 and CZ75B are both prone to leading in the first inch of the bore. I have tried different size bullets, different lubes, HI-Tek coating, alloy changes including heat treating. Always the same after a few hundred rounds.
I decided it was time to send the barrels to DougGuy on CB for his throating work. I spent a little extra to have him recut the crowns too.

Barrel crowns.

I have a feeling my leading issues are done. Doug does some very nice work.

Sweet. Pretty quick turnaround, too.

I had no idea he did crowns, that's a nice bonus.

It was 130 bucks total for the two. That includes return shipping, insured. I sent 10 bucks too much, I thought the CZ barrel was hardened and it isn't. The upcharge is for the carbide reamer required for hardened barrels.
I would have had them Tues if not for a side trip by the package from Omaha to KC Tues night.

Looks good. I've been meaning to send him my fnx 45 acp barrel just haven't gotten around to it.

Don't fret Will, I thought of this for over 6 months. Finally decided a few weeks ago it was time to get in gear and do it.

No real throats before the work. A sharp ledge at end of chamber is prone to shaving bullets. A source of leading?

It looks like he did a bang up job for you there. I bet they will both be much better off now.

I'm really shocked you didn't do it yerself! Heck, I have a 9mm throating reamer right here and could have borrowed a 45 throater. Something to be said for not having to mess with it though.

I think your CZ issue is [err was] that rough edge on the left there.
it's like they jerked the reamer to the side when someone startled them or something.

I know we have shot the same set-ups, lubes, boolits, alloy's, and loads.
and you kept having leading issues while I was just getting better or worse groups.
that picture shows exactly why.

I fired 60 rounds thru the 1911 today. Bullets were coated with HI-tek, they gave me the worst leading. No issues today.
The 9mm was a tougher test. I seated the bullets a bit long and had difficulty getting some to chamber fully. Fired about 20 rounds with no leading but hardly a good test. These were also Hi-tek coated. The 9s were sized .359 and are a bit big. I need to size to .358 and see what happens.

My new Storm Lake threaded 1911 barrel needs throating. After a few rounds it starts to choke on bullets sized .4515". Nice gentle angle, just too tight. I'm just going to bite the bullet and order a reamer from Brownells since there are several other .45 ACP pistol barrels in the arsenal that need the same treatment.

Actually, that's a commercial can, a Liberty Miranda. I did build a form 1 .45 can that can be adapted for a Liberty Mystic or Gemtec Nielsen device (the Miranda's is not swappable) but it lives on my AR-45 with a fixed barrel adapter. The one I made is a lot more quiet than the Miranda and can be disassembled for cleaning, but weighs seven ounces more and is 1/4" larger in OD, which is a little problematic with some pistol actions and sights. My solution for using the sealed Miranda with cast bullets was powder coating.

Considering you're paying for his time, his gunsmithing and machining knowledge and the specialized chamber and throating reamers he has to buy, DougGuy is doing some very nice work for a remarkably low price.

Doug uses bushings to get a straight throat.
I found his price very reasonable and the turn around was quick too. Having but one 1911 it wasn't worth me buying a reamer.

I only shoot one at a time, why have more? I only have a duplicate of one cartridge, both a single and double action 357. Well, other than revolver/lever combos in 357, 44, and 45 Colt.

Heck, I only have one wife too.

Yep, one is plenty
