First things first… My son is home from college ( an early Christmas present) so I’m super happy!! And, one of the local gun stores that was going to close up the end of October isn’t! The owners daughter and son-in-law are taking it over! That’s awesome because they have the largest inventory of any gun store for 50 miles.

So anyways, son and I went to this gun store today just to show him because he’s never been there. He bought a new Buck knife and I bought a Lee Powder Measure Kit and a Frankfort Arsenal digital caliper. The Lee kit will be great for putting together small batches of test loads when I don’t want to “calibrate“ the powder measure. I’ve never had a good caliper always using a plastic one that came with one of my trimmers. This one seems really solid and should handle my needs.

Buying something really cool tomorrow but I’m going to wait until we actually have it to say what it is. Last time I made an early announcement it was a classic case of counting the chickens before they hatch.

We had a good day today too! We went back to the one gun shop and bought a Yugoslavian 8mm Mauser. It’s modeled after the German Karabiner 98 Mauser but slightly different. I’m still learning…. My son wanted it and it’s a shooter so we bought it. Actually, the bore is in great shape!! There was also 378 rounds of 8mm ball for $200 that we couldn’t leave sitting there. We took a few shots with it today just to see if function but wasn’t prepared to do a real sight in session. I have a partial box (16) of Win hunting loads so now he wants to sight it in and use it for deer season this year. I’m game! Sight in is tomorrow morning if he’ll get out of bed in time to do it…. :)

Next thing is I need to get setup to cast and reload for it but I’ve got all winter for that.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Congratulations on the 8mm. I just picked up a K98 a few months ago.

Two years ago I was given some old ammo and reloading dies from the estate of a friend of a friends. Mostly it was a mix of old reloaded 7.7x58mm Japanese, but there was also a bandolier of Turkish 8mm surplus ball ammo, in brass clips.

Now that I have an 8mm I probably won’t be shooting up that old ammo because it is corrosive. My rifle is sporterized and scoped with an antique Weaver, in steel rings. I just don’t want to mess around with the full soap and water cleaning treatment. Not to mention that everything rusts in our PNW climate.

I suspect that your surplus ammo maybe of the corrosive Turkish variety. If it is then make sure to clean that old war horse with soap and water.
