Cluttered and messy reloading bench

I know many people who live in small towns or rural areas who haven’t locked a door in decades. Home or not the doors aren’t locked.

Still that way, in northern part of Michigan's lower peninsula. Keys left in the ignition, too.

My thoughts are that one of the best things you can do is to have regular range time at home, the neighbors will take note of that.
You got that right. And have your neighbor brag to his employees about some great shots he witnessed you make with a handgun. Berms and rails all over, silhouette targets clearly visible. Oh yeah, can you say deterrent?

When I was in high school in the mid-late 60s one of the teachers there was a mid 30s woman from a rural background who was an accomplished equestrian. Not a physically imposing woman but there was an air of don't-push-me-too-far about her. She lived in a older lower middle class neighborhood that had suffered from some rioting in previous years. The story I heard was that one day when tensions were a little high in the hood she went outside in her front yard and tied toilet paper strands from the limbs of a tree. Then she hauled out an 8' braided whip and proceeded to cut apart the TP into indiviudual squares. By the time she was done the noise had attracted a crowd so a lot fo people saw her little demo.

That summer some of the houses in her area were vandalized in various ways - she never even had any litter in her yard. Oh yeah, can you say deterrent?

Definitely agree with you there Rick. Locks keep honest people honest. Also, to some degree will encourage a BG to move on the the next house. If someone is determined to get into your house (or garage) they will do it. Security is a means of discouraging someone with bad intentions and buying time.
Same way a $1,000 safe might buy you 30 minutes and a $3,000 safe might buy you 90 minutes.

Many Years ago I used to do all the Photography for ICS (International Correspondence Schools) You may remember the ads in all those magazines ! They had many correspondence courses with a lot of hardware that went with it. ( I still have a bunch of tools from their gunsmith courses)
A good friend of mine who was a detective in Baltimore MD started telling me about these correspondence courses that were for "Be a locksmith" You guessed it the BGs would recruit people to take the "locksmith" courses! For about $1000 they were provideded with all the tools and knowledge to pick any locks! Make keys and whatever!
True story

I remember those "be a locksmith" ads. Had the same thoughts when I read them. With the right training and some experience your not gonna keep them out. A few years before I moved here the Sargent Greenleaf mechanical lock on my gun safe stopped working. wouldn't open for nothing. Called a safe guy to come out and open it & replace the lock. This guy had the job done in 15 minutes while chatting with me & drinking coffee. A cordless drill, a bore scope and a couple of picks was all it took and there was zero damage to the safe. He said after drilling a hole in the lock for the borescope that one of the tumblers was hung up and not falling when it was supposed to. Had him put an electronic lock on it.

Seriously there were some War Lords that paid to have their people trained and get the equipment needed!

Have changed my mind about the bars on the garage windows. There's a bullet hole on one of the windows that face the street. Think I'll use shutters instead.

EDIT: Also, think I'll busy myself with other things for a while. It was very difficult for me to constrain myself from responding to a contemptuous and divisive insult in this thread. Pretty sure my response would have gotten me banned.

Not stomping off and slamming the door, just need to cool off.

Knock on wood I haven't had anything stolen in a long time .

I grew up in a little desert Oasis town . In my 20s there were 2 murder suicides that ended with "the suspect was found in the desert about 30 yd from the vehicle dead . Cause is ruled a self inflicted gunshot wound ." Weird , but swift justice by conscience I guess . These little Arkie towns don't seem to have much tolerance theft . A trespasser is a criminal and if there is any threat it sounds like it's pretty much 3 S's or report a death and move along quietly .

You sure it's a bullet hole? Could easily have been a rock thrown out from a lawn mower, happens. Look on the opposite wall and see if there is a bullet hole across from the window. John took out the rear window of my truck with a rock from a weed whacker, accidental of course but it does happen.

Gotta be referring to me. No contemptuous and divisive insult intended, simply calling it as I see it. Don't be so thin skinned.

I think I'd react pretty much as Smokeywolf did Rick, you were pretty "forceful" with your comments. However, that''s water under the bridge now and we all move on.
