EGW Combat knife

Some back story. Dad had one of these I used to play with when I was a kid. Theses were kind of knock off K-Bars sold in sporting goods stores in the 1940s. Had a thin leather sheath with it. I remembered talking to me Dad who had bought it as a boy with paper route money from Pierce's Come in and Browse Around, which was a general merchandise store in Denton, Texas where he grew up (it was also the only gun shop in the town, so I have to assume Dad's boyhood .22 rifle was purchased there too).

Long story short, I grew up, went to college, then the Army, never really thought about the knife. My folks retired, moved fropm S.C. back to NE Texas and this knife sat in his morton building for about 20 years including when it flooded and ruined a bunch of things, and also rusted this knife, ruined the sheath and rotted away the rosewood handle. I got it when we moved them out about five years ago and into assisted living.

Two of my brothers are really into knife collecting and both have spent a bunch of time restoring old pocket knives. Knowing me, I was never gonna get around to it so mailed it to my brother in Oklahoma who derusted it, removed what was left of the handle, carved out a new handle, polished things up and made a new sheath for it (leather working is another skill set he has I don't). Anyway, he finished it up, probably better than new, and he brought it up to Wichita to leave with Dad yesterday. I haven't seen it in the flesh yet, but he sent me pictures periodically as the restoration progressed. So, a minor family heirloom from 1944 or so is back in fighting trim, I suppose. Dad doesn't remember it, but he really doesn't remember much of anything nowadays.

I believe some did have stacked leather handles. There is a guy on youtube who did a video restoring a couple of these, and it seems he mentioned that. These don't seem to be rare or collectable, but kind of cool anyway.

It's quite a bit longer blade than those air crew knives, though not as thick. Honestly, though I can appreciate a good knife, for all my hunting and field purposes, I have about standardized on nothing but those Mora knives. Just about the perfect size and shape, come from the factory real sharp and hold up well and are so cheap, hardly worth bothering to sharpen, just get a new one. This EGW really isn't real useful, just a neat family story behind it.

Not bothering to sharpen? Ack, gasp, sputter! I love those Mora knives. You talking the one's wth the laminated blade? Thin hard middle with softer side metal? The older ones had birch handles and the newer ones have a combination plastic and checkered rubber. I grab the older birch handled ones whenever I see them for 5 bucks or less and make sheaths for them like the old Russell Belt knives. They are a fine tool and I prefer them for gralloching over anything else I have tried.

All the ones I'ved used have the rubber and plastic handles and I believe the laminated blades. Last couple I bought on ebay brand new for about eight bucks each, you really can't beat them.

We bought 5 some years back. They do get the job done. One in each car. One in my hiking / hunting pack.
