I loaded ten cast rounds for hunting season last night for my .308. I missed the first primitive season, but wasn't going to miss the "regular" opener.
I had another box of empties, so moved my loaded rounds and put them where i could just grab them this morning and go.
Got to the woods right at daylight and grabbed my ammo only to find i had picked up the unloaded rounds..........15 miles back to the house to get ammo.
After getting back home, i finally found them 30 min. later, right where i left them.
15 miles later i'm back at the woods and grab the treestand and sling it on my back and load the rifle.
Finally get to my hunting spot(about 8 am). As i came over a little hill to drop down in the hollow to my tree, a deer takes off about 10 yds. from me and only about 5 yards from my tree...all it gave me was a Texas heart shot ...no thanks.
I stomped my foot and bleated with my mouth and it turned at about 60 yds. and showed me the throat patch through about a 3" hole in the thick stuff. I felt i could make the shot, but passed as i was afraid of hitting a limb and only wounding it.
It slowly circled to my left and back into the hollow, but staying in the thickets, i could only see bits and pieces and finally lost it.
Looked downhill to my left and it came out of the thicket and joined up with another deer that had been standing in the wide open at about 60 yds. the whole time lol.
By the time i got the scope on them they both were walking straight away.
I don't like the Texas heart shot and let them go.
Figured they might come back around later in the morning since i had the wind in my favor the whole time and didn't think they really knew what i was.
Put the treestand up and sat till 11:30am...no more deer.
Went back to the car and ate lunch, then scouted another area for buck sign. I found plenty of it and have a great spot to try later on now.
About 1 pm i went back to my treestand, slowly and carefully, hunting all the way to it.
I then took a good look around before tying my tow line to the treestand and then to my rifle
so i could pull it up once i was in the tree.
I unloaded the rifle and carefully laid it on the ground. I put one foot on the stand to step up and start climbing and a deer snorted and took off not 30 yds. away.
I was pretty disgusted with the whole deal by then, but climbed on up and stayed till just before dark....didn't see anymore deer this evening.
LOl, i've been spanked by deer many times in my life, but never this much in one day.
The good thing is though, the season's just starting and my new .308 seems to draw deer like a magnet.
This was the first time in my life i ever took empty cases on a deer hunt.
All in all it will probably go down as one of my most memorable deer hunts lol.
Now to get myself together and organized for next time.
I think my new .308(OL Ben) is disgusted with me, as this was it's first hunt.
The heck with work...i'm trying again in the morning now that i have them all good and spooked. I'm out of deer meat from last year as of 2 weeks ago.
