First 32 S&W Long reloads and unmitigated disaster.

Ben;
That is superior accuracy by any standard! I haven't shot my TC's in several years. After seeing that target, I just may have to get one of them out:D. I have a couple of actions and several barrels including a .32 H&R (Custom J.D.Jones barrel).

Thanks for reminding me...

The Lyman #313492 is among the first moulds I bought in 1981 to get started in casting, this to service a Model 31-1 x 3" that shot very well with those castings. My mould's nominal weight is given as 92 grains, and in 92/6/2 they fall free at 89 grains.

Agree with Brad! There are far to many people who talk a great deal, but say little or nothing of value!

Dale53,
Your killing me!!! I've been looking for a 631 for years. I've got a 63 and a 60-4, both are constant companions. The worst part is I used to work nights and evenings while I was in the Army, at G.A.T Guns in Hanover Park, Il. (now Dundee). I believe the 631 came out in 1984, and was a hot item at the time. I'm sure I handled at least fifty of them. Having a young family and into large bore pistols at the time, I just didn't get one. I really started looking for one about 1990. It's on my bucket list.
I'm shooting snared beaver with a .32LC load in my .32 mag,4 5/8", Single six,at 680 FPs, with the Hornady 85gr HP bullet. The RCBS 98 gr., at the same speed, exits most beaver, and a .22 lr leaves them flopping on the bank making a mess, with little hope of a reset at that location. The Hornady is Bang, DRT, in the water, no mess, reset, no exit hole.The Hornady's are hard to find and not cheap. I just purchased the NOE 314366 in an RG4, 2 GC 2PB in al. Figure on using the GC Fp in my .32-20 and the PB HP in the .32 mag. I'm pretty confident I can match the performance of the Hornady with this mould. I'm hoping to get the same accuracy as the RCBS.

Rally;
Maybe we just need to lobby Lipsey to badger Smith to make a special run of 631's. Wouldn't that be great?

I keep my fingers crossed for you (and Al)...

Sounds good to me, as long as I don't have to take out a second mortgage to finance it. It would be nice to just change pistols instead of holsters on my "beaver belt". That Ruger feels like a club after using the J frames most of the winter.

I would be abundantly happy with a nice-shape Colt Police Positive 4".......Model 30/31 or their precursors with similar barrel lengths in 32 S&W Long. Rarities like a S&W Model 16 or Colt E/I-frame in 32 SWL would be a delight, but I'm not holding my breath on those latter examples. I saw a Model 31-1 x 4" I should have snagged about 3 years ago at a Boise gun show, like-new shape in the $450 ballpark. Shoulda woulda coulda. They don't grow on trees, for darn sure. I've debated having Harton punch out a Single-Six to 32 SWL for me, and invariably the chorus cries out GET THE SINGLE SEVEN/SP-101.

FWIW, I have owned and shot quite a few Ruger 32 H&R's and now 327's. None have shot well for me with 32 long brass loads, but OK with chambered sized brass and deep seated WC's. My kit gun is an early unhardened cylinder 3 1/2" 32 Hand Ejector, circa 1912. Fifty percent of 32 HE's were made like this, RB and 3 1/2" barrels for a reason, they carry well and shoot well. At least with modern grips if you have big hands. They will shoot the RCBS 98 grain SWC at 750 f/s to POA for me, so I'm very happy with it. I've kept the SP101 in 327 for a long range plinker with 150 grain bullets, and the S&W Ti in 32 H&R for carry. Ric

Al;
I have a 4" SP101 in .32 magnum. The rear sight is adjustable for windage only and I could NOT get the gun zero'd no matter what I did. I took it to my pistolsmith and had him install a Red Dot sight on it (he thought I was out of my mind). I put a set of grips on it (it has a SMALL grip as issued) and it handles better. I have medium to large hands with long fingers and even with the new grips it is rather a short reach to the trigger. However, with the Red Dot I am on target and the gun shoots VERY well. There should be one or two of those out there if you can handle one with a Red Dot sight:

Just a thought or two...

The short brass in long chamber combo sets my teeth on edge. Avoidance of the 327 Federal has its basis in that trait, and that I don't want another caliber to ride herd on. Just the opposite, in fact--I'm trying to thin out the caliber count around here. I already have over 1,000 pieces of 32 SWL brass on hand, also--it's dumb to go 327 under these conditions.

Dale53,
It was downright mean of you to post that picture of the 631. LOL I'm going on a 3000 mile trip to Ft. Brag, NC tomorrow, and will have to check out every gun shop that is open, on the trip now.
Did you put that red insert in the front site? S&W was offering the option at the time, but I'm not sure I ever saw one on a 631?
Wish me luck.

My 631 is just as issued except for the grips. As you can see, I blackened the front sight for target work.

My son was stationed at Ft.Bragg for a number of years (Medical Officer in Delta) until he retired. That brings back good memories of some fine people I met there. Have a REALLY good time!

I can recommend the 631 without reservation.
