Friday the 13th ....Range Trip!

Hi Folks,
Just thought I would share with you what can happen on a "Friday the 13th"
Yesterday my Buddy ed and I decided to take the morning off from work , since it is the first true Spring day we have had here in NEPA since last Spring.
No Wind, Temps in the 50's Birds singing! Perfect.....except !!!!!
Was shooting my old worn out 1916 Mauser with my newest accurate load of 9.4 grains Red Dot and the long and lanky Lyman 287221 bullet that was PC 2x in Smoke's Clear These 2 coats get the bullet at the size that is near perfect for the very worn throat of this 7x57 mauser ( 1916 Spanish) with no sizing needed.
I had loaded 60 rounds ( 10 shots per each of 6 targets) Shooting at 50yds with William receiver rear and my modified aperture front sight the targets were 3.5 inch black bulls. The first 5 targets were about average for me at about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inch groups with a number of shots touching. I noted at the sun got higher the groups improved. The 6th target was shot after a good 20 minute BS session with a few shooters on the range. The rifle had cooled down and the sun got higher.
Since it was my last 10 rounds and I knew I would be back to work within an hour I took extra time sighting each shot. After 6 shots a few of the guys wanted to go down range and pick up their targets, so I took a break and went down to my target to see my last string of 6 Wow now I was excited ....6 in a ragged hole from rifle that I thought would never shoot!
We got back to the benches and the range went hot so again I took my time with my last 4 shots................
:embarrassed: this is where the "Friday the 13th" bad luck sets in! The next four shots had all the control and sight picture and let off of the last 6........they had to be in the same group! I packed up my Gun and shooting box and waited for the "all clear" to retrieve my target. As I got closer my heart sank......yes the last 4 shots were in a tight group but to the right of the first 6 shots!
What else can I say!

Ten years ago I would have said barrel heating or bore conditions. Now I would add "round bottom fore end not riding the bag the same." I found this out at a match where we had to take our rifles out of the bags and rack them while the range crew chased off a big herd of antelope. Every one shooting "Issue" class or had an issued stock had their zero change. Interesting isn't it?

Wow, Jim, you've brought that rifle a LONG way! Excellent shooting even if the little Sprites had some fun at your expense. As I was reading I was waiting for you to say the last four scattered out, and really glad they also kept a good group together, even if off from the others.. Looks like you got the load figured out.

Ian,
The load was easy....for me, Red Dot always has out shown any other powder for velocities under 1300 fps ( with American Select coming in 2nd) especial with old military rifles Brad is going to get me the data on this load.

The trick was the PC coating! Brings up the diameter and fine tunes & Irons out the bore. In a way I'm almost sorry to say that PC was the way to go on this old trash rifle. ( unfortunately it aso appears that PC has out done all my best traditional lube load with the .223, 30-30 and 358 win!.... I'm sure a lot of my old friends here will not like this...and that troubles me....however the writing is on the wall. I keep extensive notes when testing...and they do not lie. After 4 months of testing....there is definite proof ....just not liking that cross linked "Terror" in place of inhaling traditional lube)

Jim, Thank you for validating my thoughts from an article I did about 4 years ago when powder coating first was getting popular. This is a great tool for the master caster to have in his tool box! The first is for hunting bullets cast from pure lead and the second is what you have so greatly demonstrated. Odd sized bores, leads and chambers where there are no bullets that fit. The ability to adjust the size and shape of the bullet, economically, will keep this technique growing. Thanks again, Ric

I don't know why any of your old friends wouldn't congratulate you for sticking with that old rifle for so long and trying enough things to finally get something that shoots, I know I'm very happy for you, and for the rifle!

the front sight picking up the sun will shift the groups around in a frowny face shape.
I think I still have a target here somewhere [I shot with my 340-A] that makes a nice rainbow of groups that I shot one day at the range.
our range faces south BTW.

You really got me, JW. I thought this would be a tale of a blown up rifle or something. Very glad that wasn't the case.

My sks will do the "rest spot walk" too. That is a fantastic group anyway.

Well,
No worries on that, because all of my friends have congratulated me on getting this old one to shoot again. It is just that breaking with tradition "Lube wise" cases me some trouble...but it is not like I'm jumping ship. I just think it is the right tool for the right job.
My 358 Win has a loose spot in the bore 2/3rd the way down barrel Always has shot accurately but not for more then 40 shots at a time and always had to be with long 230 gr +bullets. Now I find I can shoot 158 SWCs as well as the big bullets accurately as long as I want That bore issue does not affect the PC coated rounds, Not really sure how that works but it sure made me happy!

No worries at all on the lube thing, feed that baby what she likes. Sounds like you've really got it going well.
