At the casting bench in the sky. RIP Bret.
There were also a fair number of rivalries and disputes. Freud didn't invent "ego", he just gave it a name.
I was going to protect St Elmer a bit and mention some of the nasty people he had to deal with back in the day but decided not to. Some of the "disputes" were more like decades long wars!!!

From the 1880's through the 1950's people actually wrote letters; pen and ink on paper. Elmer Keith actually wrote more than one letter each day, and Townsend Whelen more than three each day. There was much more thought about shooting when you had to write it out, and not keyboard it onto the internet.

No matter what people think now, nothing was done in the dark for the last 150 years, just slower.
In the 1960's, the Dope Bag answered several of my questions with handwritten letters. Elmer Keith and Townsend Whelen both replied to questions on caliber choice and rifle bedding. The letters included a hand-drawn illustration of bedding the chamber area and free-floating the barrel. I lost the letters during a divorce, I wish I had them today.

I'd like to react to this one, but I don't think "like" would be appropriate.

Keith was still answering letters in the late '70s/early '80s. We exchanged several letters around then. In one, he wrote a page to answer one of my ignorant-kid questions, and pointed me to several references that started my gun library.
