I have two lots of 7383. Neither is anything like 4831. One acts like 4350 in most cartridges. The other lot acts like 4064 and 4350 depending on what cartridge. Both seem to like an over bore cartridge.
It is not a powder I would suggest playing with from the milsurp line. I will never buy anymore or take any more for free. The stuff was cheap when we bought it, like $2-3 per pound.
It will get spikey for any number of reasons, OAL, bullet change, nearing a top end load it will show no sign till the bolt locks up.
Milsurps will have to be half price or less to get me to look at them anymore.

unless I were going to use it in something like the x39 case I would avoid it too.
their BR-2 and BR-5 are worth looking at, and of course the 844 is a good one,
it has all kinds of uses.
I run 2230 which is basically the same [as is H-335] all up and down the ladder 25-20/30-30/308/0-6. with both jacketed and cast.
it has done stuff it shouldn't and took it like a champ.

And 335 can give some scary velocities in a Marlin 1895 45-70 at sane pressures. A 405 Remington at 2000 fps plus is something to behold. On both ends.

Back in the '90's, I used a lot of WC844 in my Mauser 7.62x51 under the Lyman 311644, 314299 and RCBS 30-180 SP. A charge of 28.5gr with 1/2gr polyester batting gave me about 1850 FPS and groups under 2" groups at 100 yards. It was great for off hand practice. My new plan is to use it in my SKS's for cheap fodder.

That IMR 7383 is scary stuff from all the reports of pressure excursions. I bought a jug when powder was hard to find and haven't opened it. It was for when I had nothing else to shoot.

Brad,
Yes, I did load up my GG with a 405 to over 2100 for five shots.

No need to EVER do that again! Yikes. The gun can take it by I cannot.

My African 'heavy rifle' load was 405 Rem at 1750, and 335 will to that handily, as will
the W748 that I use. My guess is that WC844 is close enough to both of them that it
would do the same in .45-70 if you were inclined and had a griz or moose that needed
whacking.

About the 7383 ...

It ain't similar to other canister powders due to the flash suppressant.

Nothing scary about it. It is sensitive about being taken out of its happy zone. The happy zone is 38,500 psi. If you go with less it will be dirty. If you go more it gets unhappy. Once you pass 40,000 psi it becomes unpredictable. By burning the powder outside & above it's designed pressure application you are changing the burn rate, essentially teetering on a much faster burn rate by overcoming the flash suppressant. That's when things go south quick & my layman's attempt to articulate what's happening.

I've burned 21lbs so far in 223 thru 308. I've heard it said many times "you can't over fill that case with it". That is untrue for most situations. Any case that can generate more than 38,500psi with it can be overfilled. It always shows pressure signs if exceeding the happy zone.

Loads must be worked carefully. It actually works pretty good in some cases. I've a some for x39, 3030, &308. Bullshop really liked this powder in the 308 & shared some useful tips on the old site. Once you get near compression you don't want increases more than 1/10th of a grain at a time, it will show you where your at.
