Let's see if my luck has changed

A gentleman in California was to send me a Cadet barrel that was rebored and chambered .357Mag, along with a Cadet buttstock. Didn't really need the wood, tho it is purty. Stock made the trip, barrel went out the end of the box. Came in 2 days just as paid for. You can't get a human being on the phone at USPS, just automated menus. However, I discovered yesterday that if you sign on at the USPS website, there is a way to start a search for lost mail, pretty detailed, even down to gun barrels, stocks, triggers, etc. Some restrictions of fed law do apply. Put my info in the system, now sit back and wait. It "could" happen. Sure hope so, it was for a project for one of my grandsons. GW

Sorry to hear that. I go over the top in packaging due to stories like that. Well wishes for recovery.

That sucks. All I have to say is a roll of packing tape is cheap.......

At large, whereabouts unknown.
Rifle barrels need to be packaged with some oversized reinforcement on each end. They have a way of turning into a secondary projectile when handled poorly, and punch their way right out of the box. I'm guessing that the USPS will rule if as "improper packaging".

Sender used "gorilla tape" down the flap seams, also around the diameter both ends and middle. Barrel fit diagonally in the box, punched out right thru the corner. Good 'ol USPS did a good job of patching the hole, didn't even notice it from the outside. Thing that really gets to me is how the PO had gone 100% technology, you can't even call the local office and talk to a real human and maybe get some "service". Guess I"m old fashioned that way. Let's see if going thru the website is worth the trouble. GW

You have to really, really tape up the ends, several layers, and make sure that any long narrow and heavy parts
(barrels) have a piece of heavy cardboard, like two or three layers directly attached to the barrel to spread load
out.
I bought a take off Savage bbl and it arrived intact with two or three threads left of the filament tape
over the end left holding the end cap on. One good shake and the bbl would have fallen out, but it
did make it. Sorry job of packing loose rattling back and forth and one layer of tape, rubbed through
on conveyors, probably.

A chuck of 2x4 with a shallow hold in it would help. Barrel end goes in hole the. Lots of tape to keep it in place. A block of wood 3" long isn't going to become a missle.

I registered with them to reschedule a delivery that hadn't been made yet, that was going to happen on a Saturday because they took over a week to get it across three states. I rescheduled it for Monday, easy enough to figure out....but the delivery time associated with the tracking number didn't change after I did that. There's a note in the change delivery page that says something to the effect of "change confirmed, but we will probably ignore it because our computer systems aren't linked to each other". I was able to flag down the delivery driver on Friday and he did me a special favor and held the package until Monday, but sure enough, the system still tried to deliver it on Saturday. The problem for me is if delivery is attempted and they leave a note, they will not re-deliver the item, I would have to take time off work go to the po and waste an hour or more dealing with their apathy and incompetence.

So, don't expect much from the on-line system.

I have a heck of a time getting lead by way of U.S.P.S. Priority mail. LINOTPYE in type form will dribble out the corners, buy 40lbs get 25lbs. And they refuse to deliver to my house. I have to go down to the PO to pick it up. I have to wait in 2 seperate lines then they send me to a side door and after waiting another 15minutes, somebody will push the box out with their foot. Can't even lift it onto the dolly I have to bring. So much for helping a obviously disabled person.

Don't let the PO get away with that. "If it fits, it ships, up to 70lbs". Their rules, not ours. If they are too lazy or weak to deliver the box to your home address, then the carrier needs to be fired for failing to meet job qualifications. Discuss it with your local postmaster.
