Many of You Will Recognize This Robust Folder

I had several dozen customs at one time and had, sold, traded many more. When I started paring down, all but two customs went away, each a gift from a different knife-maker. Other than that, my most-useful/most-used knives are pretty inexpensive knives which don' turn many heads, but they work well.

THIS one is probably superfluous to my needs, but when I was a kid, I wanted one badly. I forgot about them for a long time and then saw they were still available on a Finnish site and I ordered one. It rides in bag I keep for outdoor jaunts. Haven't needed to use it, but I'm sure it will serve well when I do.

They are now finally discontinued and I wish I'd bought a few more when I got this one, especially the hideous booger-green model.

After 4 years, just a week ago managed to pick the lock on a very large mahogany roll-top desk that got closed and key misplaced when we moved. Found my missing Case Bulldog folder in one of the drawers.

Brian, that was really cool! Thanks for taking the time. I know how busy you are, so that means a lot that you went to the trouble.

THANK YOU!

I remember seeing them in ads back in the day.

Those ads got me stirred up. They were far from expensive, but my brother and I collected pop bottles through the summer for "knife money." There wasn't a bunch of money in that, but the local elevator had an Imperial Knife showcase full of $2 and $2.50 knives. About every two weeks, we'd have enough cash to each buy one. We went through a lot of those knives, but in truth, they weren't very good knives.

The "Big Swede" looked so awesome in the ads, and I'd read somewhere that the SAS fellas sort of took to that husky folder, which added to the mystique.

"Swedish steel." Mine is made from Sandvik 12C27, which is my favorite stainless. It's not expensive, can be hardened to R62, takes a really fine edge easily and holds it very well. I've used a lot of the newer "boutique" stainless steels and they were fine, but not noticeably "better" than 12C27 to me.

@smokeywolf , that's sort of like CHRISTMAS! I've done that - "lose" a knife and eventually have it turn up. It's better than getting a NEW knife!

@CWLONGSHOT , I need to troll eBay and look for one of those Normarks like the one that looks like a fillet knife until you take it out of the sheath. I've never seen one of those, but that is cool.

They are real nice Jeff! ( I have two!)

TWO?? I SO wish I'd bough THREE of a few I have. While deciding which one I'd stow in a bag (three needed), all the prices went out of sight by the time I found the "right" one. I will confess though that I have at least three original Mora 510s and three "new" Mora 510s, as well as an original 545. My most-used fix-blade, a main user and a backup in every bag. I was smart enough to buy half a dozen A. G. Russel Woodswalkers when they were $10 each too.

As for a more robust/larger knife for each bag, there's were I fell down.

All the time and money I spent on buying and testing custom knives...

Once I started sorting through stuff and deciding which would stay and which would go, all the customs (except the two which were gifts from the makers) found other homes. "Cheaper" production knives ended up winning out, because they were what I used most. NOT because the customs were too expensive or "too nice" to take outside and get dirty - I did that. They ALL got put to the test and almost all did very well. But every time I went out, I'd look at all those knives and try to decide which one deserved a turn. The vast majority of the the time, it ended up being an inexpensive production Swedish or Finnish knife. I have a soft spot for the Finns too, so I like that they have great knives.

I wish I'd focused more on those then. So much stuff today, even EKA, of Sweden, who made the Big Swede/Swede 92 we both posted about, have deferred to the superficial desires of a superficial market force, where style subdues substance. Kicking myself in the butt is actually good exercise though, so I guess there's a silver lining!

Now, while not REALLY inexpensive, but still a good value, Fallkniven makes one heck of a knife! I let an F1 in VG10 go I wish I'd kept. Bought it used for $75, used it a few years and sold it for $75. It was a first-rate knife. They go for much more now.

I have a couple Finnish knives I will post on too.

Nice!

Different models or just slightly different from one run to the other?

The bottom one looks slightly smaller and the blade is almost identical to mine.

I love t hat you can take them apart to clean them. That's one thing I've never liked about folders, especially if used on game or food prep.
