My Uncle Elmer, (Uncle Bub), went into the Battle of the Bulge in a Glider! He took shrapnel through his helmet and woke up blind in a French Hospital. He lived to be 88. His sight returned in that hospital when the swelling on his brain went down.

A friend of mine, who looked like the kid in the picture of Montana, jumped in Normandy, Market Garden, trucked into Bastogne and jumped Across the Rhine.

He said the officers got just as much to eat as the men in Bastogne, but their coffee was hotter. Plus they got melted snow to shave every morning. He got his Purple Heart there.

I once read of speculation that his one-word reply, to the German commander's request to surrender, was not nuts but another four-letter word.
