mental image of myself trying to snake across 250 yds. of sagebrush and short grass fast enough to catch up to a deer heading to the hay field right before dusk.If they are too far away for the 30-30- you need to practice getting closer.....
I have the perfect solution!Looks awesome and would be a blast in our woods. But... I will be "that guy."
I just can't get a nice high end rifle (NON-Lever gun; High end 30-30 Lever is on another level!) like the #1 in a plain Jane 30-30 caliber. I want it in an 'exotic' or odd caliber, and something I can stretch out and take advantage of its strong action - IF I want to...
And, again, that guy, IF it were mine, I would be sorely tempted to rechamber it in 38-55. Would still prefer a 38-55 in a lever, but would be cool in a #1.
.38-55 chamber vs bore dimensions suck canal water.Looks awesome and would be a blast in our woods. But... I will be "that guy."

Yes, bought NIB at the Tulsa Show. Was that one of your Tulsa Gun Show scores from a few years ago? IIRC Ruger produces something like 50 of those a year and they're pre-ordered out for next to forever. You'd think they'd cash in on the demand, or maybe they want at least ONE model in their lineup to be considered "collectible".
There's a better one IMO, that's the 30-40 Krag, *just* enough extra capacity to launch the 220+ gr bullets at good (yet full power) cast speeds, a long neck for those cast bullets and the ability to extend your range out to an easy 300 yds. That's perfect for deer. I've never liked heavy guns. To me that is the ideal size for a #1. Call it a 7.62x52R and load ELD bullets in in if you want exotic.
Be kind of a toss up, wouldn't it?! 303 brass would be easier to find and the joy in having a 303 barrel cut to SAAMI specs and not a 100 year old war production job that might have laid uncleaned for 75 years certainly sounds good to me. But, a Krag! Whata choice! one I doubt I'll ever have to make sadly. There's a better one IMO, that's the 30-40 Krag, *just* enough extra capacity to launch the 220+ gr bullets at good (yet full power) cast speeds, a long neck for those cast bullets and the ability to extend your range out to an easy 300 yds.
That or a 303 British would probably be my ideal single shot Ruger #1 caliber
I've got a P14 Enfield that is a Remington made mauser from 1916, I'm not sure what it did for the last 107 years but it's probably as close to a SAAMI spec 303 as I'll ever see.Be kind of a toss up, wouldn't it?! 303 brass would be easier to find and the joy in having a 303 barrel cut to SAAMI specs and not a 100 year old war production job that might have laid uncleaned for 75 years certainly sounds good to me.
