OK, all o' y'all--I just got sprung about am hour ago. MANY THANKS for the answered prayers and well-wishes! The eye alignment is improving and looking better since the steroid infusions and oral dosage had begun 3 evenings ago. GREAT TREATMENT as always at my hospital 1/2 mile from home, once you get past the gatekeepers at the front desk AND the ER techs and MDs whose sole mission in life is to dissuade drug-seeking at all costs. This was the worst of the entire experience--my own pain level was a dead heat for the kidney stone I passed in 2003, and I wasn't given so much as a TYLENOL for 13+ hours of waiting in the ER lobby. I was hurtin' for certain, but two other folks were likely in worst shape in terms of pain level--A 30-year old woman was GENUINELY, OBVIOUSLY in agony from passing a gallstone (Marie's belief), and a 50 year old man had a CLEARLY and GROSSLY dislocated shoulder. Those ER personnel were entirely DGAF. EMS, fire service. and law enforcement can succinctly separate drug-seekers from genuine pain-suffering people, though you would think people in an ER would refine their skill sets past 7th grade shallowness. I am still pissed about this. The helping professions are supposed to relieve misery, not exacerbate it! SICK! Some venues of medicine are truly perverse and twisted since the "Pill Mill' and Covid days.

Back at home takes a lot of pressure off you, but a little additional pressure on Marie. On the plus side, she can check on you anytime/all the time and that relieves stress. All in all, good for both of you.

There is no place like home.

I agree wholeheartedly with Allen's statement that ER docs are not wont to do anything to relieve a patient's pain. Though I was there for only five hours, not once did the doc give me anything nor prescribe anything upon my discharge. It wasn't till two days later that the family doc offered, but Tylenol and Advil had proven effect enough and I thanked him and said it was not necessary.

^^^^^Exactly, what I did with pain meds that I didn't use. I try to avoid using them because of the side effects.

I just checked; I have some prescriptions from back around 2000; yes they degrade somewhat but not as much as I have. You might consult with your friendly Pharmacist to make sure you're just taking meds that are losing potency and not toxic.

That's why you fill every pain pill prescription you get and stash them back someplace safe and climate controlled so you have them when you REALLY need them.
That is what I do. Usually only need a few days worth and then the rest go in the medicine drawer. If those are kept "cool, dark, and dry" how long can they remain useful and safe?

24 hours post-release now, and doing well. Eyesight is re-aligning right along, and got about 12 hours of solid rest last night. Mama CZ got good rest last night as well, and we plan a quiet weekend of rest and reading as best I can with wonky eyesight.

Certainly a few years.
most medications will degrade some over time but that doesn’t mean they drop off a cliff. The expiration date is a “we know it is good at least this long” date, doesn’t mean it may not be good longer.
Cool and dry is the key. Not over 80° and not exposed to excessive humidity. Kinda like me

Although I have very limited knowledge of pharmaceuticals, I've not heard of pain meds being dangerous after the exp. date, but have heard that Tetracycline can become toxic after expiration date.

Brad, not wanting to put you on the spot, but have I read this correctly?

Allan, herself and I are truly sorry to read all this, except the part about recovery. Our prayers and best wishes for you and Marie both.

A few days away from the forum might not have been that good of a plan.
